Steatogenys elegans

Also known as: Centipede Knifefish, Mottled Knifefish, Elegant Knifefish.

Peaceful. Can live in groups. Awesome for small planted community tanks!

Also known as: Carapo Knifefish, Zebra knifefish, Banded Knifefish..

You can see Videos of both the Tiger Knife and Zebra Knife if you visit the Video Gallery at www.XoticAquatix.com ... Enjoy!

White-Line Knife, Gold-Line Knife..

Much similiar to a Black Ghost knife, However they are suppose to get larger.. Exporter claims them to be fairly rare, but not a high demand for them! Not the greatest pictures, but atleast you can kind-of see what they look like!

This was a species that was mixed in with a bag of small Carapo Knifefish.. It's pattern is distinct, and much different.. Unsure of the exact species, as it is not G. Tiger, but it is a very nice fish nonetheless. This one was a little beat up, but he healed up nicely and wen't out the door fast!

AKA: Glass Knife, Electric Knife, Green Knife..

Another peaceful Knifefish that can be kept in shoals.. Our Exporter claims them to be rare, but once again there was very little demand for them. These guys are different than the "Transparent" Knives that are more commonly available.

Brown Ghost Knife... Chocolate Knifefish.

Similiar to the Black Ghost Knife.. Care and Requirements are nearly the same!

Awesome fish!

And the ever-popular Black Ghost Knife! No comments needed.

Here is my big guy, at about 14"+..

Trumpet Knife (?)

the trumpet nose is not a knife...that is a mormyrid. From Africa. ALso, Aba Aba, despite being called a knife are more closely related to Mormyrids than to the S. American knifes (that are also from Africa, like other mormyrids). An Aba is a HUGE fish... its my DREAM FISH. How big should the tank be? Well, whatever you think is appropriate for a 5-6ft fish that is reasonably active. That is why I don't have one. I can dream though!

Hey, Miles, very nice pics though... your photos / thread I am sure got some people more interested in these cool fish!!

Miles
03-08-2006, 11:32 PM
these look great. they common?

Not often seen! A favorite of mine, as they dont demand high price.. Kind of hard to feed.. Not popular in the pet stores because they have a tendency to 'play dead' and lay on their sides and among the live plants. Great for planted community tanks.. I have imported them before, they were $10 when I had em. I will try to stock more in the future..

Glass knife of mine... i saw a picture of these guys on the first page but i wanted to share mine. Very cool fish, loves his glass chimneer until the NTT kicks it out and hogs it. Loves the plants, bloodworms and brine shrimp. I'd recommend them.

I will try to get some decent pics from the knife fish lab i work at and put them up in here.

we have a few different south american knife fish most people have seen.

we have the already listed brown ghoats, eigamannia (glass), gold lines (we have a couple over a foot long)

My pics suck so i apologize but its the best i got. lab conditions arent the best to get good pics.

Just for right now, here is one species we have...

Adontosternarchus spp.
Also called "marbled" knifefish

There is two int he tank, one dark and one bright orange/yellow. unfortunately, the yellow one just recently killed the other one. These pics are about 4 months old, ill try to get newer ones when i can.

Thank you.....stumpy is kindof a sad little thing though. I thought I had looked him over good at the LFS but late last night realized his right fin is missing. I thought about taking him back but i figure he has survived this long without it he must be a tough little guy. Besides i will love him finless or not and if someone else got him who knows. I forgot how addicting the fish hobby is.

ok is this called the zebra knife??? as my lfs say they have one for sail how true do you think that is??? i live in upstate new york i mean its about 4'' right now and i can't see him well enough to say for myself as i know nothing about knife fish but would like to start lol. i am thinking it might be what they call an elegant. but like i said they say its a zebra if it is i know there rare and i would like to pick it but but i don't know how much i should pay for it or how to take care of it. can you help me with some basic info? thank you

i had one that i bought up state ny too...and i was told it was a tiger knife...or zebra..it turned out to be a rare fragile knife... i call it BB for short because it has a huge name... anyway,.there is always the chance of getting a rare knife mixed in with others... mine would only eat bloodworms... it was about 12 inches long but tiny mouth,, non agressive... where if this one you see at LFS is carapo knife they are aggressive..so find out what the lfs is feeding it and it will give me a clue... there are so many different knives.. some not even discovered yet. This was mine..i eventually lost him to parasite..

This is my BGK, when I got him he was about 3 inches, he got lost in a planted tank, and when I found him again he was 7 inches or so now. I rarely see him, but every once in a while I see him dragging a shrimp pellet into his hide. He also eats algae wafers at times.

To Bigtyme, your ck's spots are like perfect! Very nice.
This is my ck, he is roughly 24", about 3" thick I'd say, we recently plopped him in our 90gal, so this is no longer his current setup.

Samuel's ghost knifefish is distinguished from the only other species in the genus, C. compsa, in having more caudal-fin rays, a shorter caudal peduncle, a less tapering body shape in lateral profile, and a smaller maximum adult body size.

LOVE YOUR L240 BTW!

I'll bump this thread, even though it's a sticky :D Here is my BGK. 11"-12". I have never had a fish I thought I found dead so many times LOL! It has a spot at the top of a 20" tall anubias plant I find it drapped over and just lays there like it was dead. This guy loves electronics, powerheads, outlet to the FX5 anything moving or huming and that is where you find him. Wierd...... :screwy:

Yes, and African Knives have been kept with BGKs.

Can a black ghost knife go in with a brown ghost knife?

the reason im asking this is because someone told me they had a black ghost knife and then put a brown ghost knife in and in seconds they went into battle mode and bite eachother once and they both died instantly, so i was woundering if there is any truth to this...
thanks.

Now, I have never had a Brown Ghost Knife before, but from what I know it would be a bad idea. Both can be very aggressive. If you have ever seen the aggression of a BGK, its is the same for the Brown GK. Putting them both together would most likely turn into a brawl.
Now, I have never had these two together, nor have had the chance to study a Brown GK up close, so there is a possibility it would work. However there is still a chance that it would not, which would mean you would need a back up plan such as a different tank for the BGK or Brown GK.
