piranha45
06-10-2005, 5:36 PM
well there's the south american candiru, a little worm-like fish which can crawl up your genitalia if your wading in the amazon...

i dont know of any poisonous freshwater fish except stingrays, and freshwater stingrays' sting isn't fatal, tho it hurts like all hell.

I don't know of any large freshwater fish that will attack people, except bullsharks. There's no way in hell anyone could keep a 10-foot bullshark in an aquarium tho.

on a big specimen can be fatal.

There are a lot of comments about stingrays here, and coincidentally, that's what I'm considering taking on as my next challenge. I'm looking for some more informaiton on them, and will probably post in other forum areas as well, but of those of you who have kept them, are they really THAT dangerous? I understand that their sting can be very painful, but fatal? Also, what sort of habitats have you set up for them?

Stingrays are considered dangerous because they have spines that are poisonous and a sting will definitely land you a visit to the hospital. Symptoms include but not limited to: swelling, extreme pain and nausea . Ive never heard of a hobbyist dying from a stingray , just from amazon natives who die of infection from a sting.

Stingrays are not aggressive however and they only attack when they feel threatened. If you do not plan on putting your hand in the tank, then keeping them would be safe. There are nets, thongs and other devices that you could use to do maintenance.

Lastly, I suggest buying Barron's Freshwater Stingrays if you want to be armed with the basics before taking care of rays. Well worth is since its not even fraction of a cost of the cheapest stingrays.

that answer to that would be none. There is no fish kept in aquariums that are dangerous to humans. Fish cant do anything to people while they are in their fish tank. People consider certain fish dangerous because they so happen to get injured by the fish while the had their hands/arms in the tank and was due more to human stupidity and carelessness.

Now if you broaden that range from fish to other aquatic animals, then yes there are some dangerous ones like say the blue ring octopus which CAN crawl out of your tank.

I am assuming that by dangerous you mean to people and in the wild, if so I would have to say sting rays, the fw bull shark, electric eels, and candiru, all of which have caused human fatalities. The rays and candiru have mainly killed through secondary infections, the eel through drowning while stunned, and the shark just eats you. Piranha have a history of many attacks but no confirmed fatalities that I have seen records of. As for our aquarium fish plotting against us, just be glad they have no thumbs.

If we are talking in terms of most DANGEROUS towards humans in 'Home Aquaria', I would rank them like this. I would also be interested to see what type of bite a 5-6 foot 'Synbranchus Marmoratus' aka marbled swamp eel, would have upon a human? I heard they are very similiar to green wolf eels.

5) Stingray Sting/Venom
4) 5ft Electric Eel Zap
3) Giant Channa Sp. Attack
2)16" Fahaka Puffer Bite
1) 30"+ Mbu Puffer Bite

Some people forget to take into consideration the massive size of Mbu Puffers. They are designed to destroy hard-shelled crustacea. 6" Crayfish are like french fries to these guys. Taking off a person finger off at the knuckle is no exaggeration, as I have seen pictures. If a Mbu owner was careless enough to take his eye off even the most 'gentle of giants', it could possibly do some very permenant damage. A fahaka, especially with its own personal anger issues, is no whimp either..

Hasta,
Miles

Yesterday I got bit by a 2" African pike (H. odoe), and it drew blood... I would hate to be bitten by a 2'er! As for the alligator gar, they are pretty aggressive for gars, but still not too bad.. of course, there would be individuals that are nuts. Like my Florida... he snaps at my fingers when I do water changes, and I havn't hand fed him or anything that would lead to him connecting my hand to food! But they are generaly pretty peaceful. When I was diving in FL I saw a couple of 2'-3' Floridas and a 4' longnose, tried to get a closer look and they didn't want anything to do with me, LOL.

in my opinion there are a lot of dangerous fish... but most of the fish are (dangerous) in self-defense... I had a 36 gallon aquarium.... with a 6" pterois russeli, 4" pterois mombasae, 3" fuzzy dwarf, and a 3" mozambique scorpionfish.... my 150 was cycling... well I had my hands in there reguraly...

I love snakeheads... they are real terrors... but when you look at them.. they have big teeth, the aggression, etc... but I think that a big hoplias would be worse... they have big mouths but with huge teeth.... I mean who would want to mess with this

but I think that atfs, electric eels, wolffish, snakeheads, and a lot of other fish.... But I would never swim with a Big wolffish.... I don't know is is just me or do wolffish look more "built" then snakeheads... don't get me wrong I love snakeheads... but wolves look more muscular... with a bigger mouth.... you know
