Today is WC day & when I went to Punkster's tank (my red miurus), there was a giant red ball of fungus in there. I didn't think I fed her a piece of shrimp that big. When I went to get it out, it was her! Man, did she smell bad. She was swollen too. I just fed her to other day & she was fine. I tried an autopsy but her organs were kind of mushy. Nothing looked awry though. I'm so devistated...
She was a really cool fish who would bite anyone that stuck their hand in her tank.

The only think I can think of I did different was put a sponge over the filter intake to keep the sand out. I was tired of cleaning out the impeller all the time. Maybe it slowed down the flow too much, depleting the O2 in the tank. I wish I had checked on her sooner.

Yeah, I'm really surprised how fast she got furry. I fed her an earthworm just the other day. I checked to see if it was digested & it was.

I had Punkster for about 5 years. She was a tiny 1" baby when I got her.
Here she is when I 1st got her, next to a UGF down tube cover:

Aw man, so any clues as to the death?

Other than the new sponger I had just added over the filter intake slowing down the flow to the tank, none. I cut her open & saw the worm I fed her the other day was fully digested--the organs were pretty mushy.

I have been buying easrthworms from my LFS for 20 years. Fed from the same batch to 4 other puffers & many other large fish.

Just thought I would ask. Didn't mean any disrespect. In PA most pet stores don't carry earthworms- need to go to a fish/bait shop and I don't trust them to not have any chemicals on the worms. If I need worms, I go to an organic farm and ask if I can dig some- I know the farmer.

I didn't put another fish in there. The tank is drained now.
