Is putting bettas with cherry reds a bad plan?

Ditto. Kiss them goodbye when they drop to the betta tank.

depends on the betta, tank size, and level of planting. Most liekly it won't work out.

The shrimps would end up as a snack for the Betta. I was able to keep a couple of Ghost Shrimps with a Betta before, but I think Ghost Shrimps are a bit bigger than Cherry Shrimps.

What size tank are you planning? I have cherry shrimp and a betta together in a heavily planted 36g. I never see juvies as they stay deeply hidden in the plants, but I see adults out all the time. In a smaller tank I doubt it would work, but in a "larger" tank it might. It really depends on the temperament of your betta and your plans for decor.
