As I posted before I bought an Ornate last Sunday and have had him/her in quarantine until this afternoon.

I just took him out of quarantine and put him in with my Senegal.

The Senegal will not stop trying to "hump" the ornate.

Several months ago this happen with a small PetSmart senegal i put in the tank. Constant humping. It died, and I was never sure why.

No change the larger ones sexual advances can cause a stress related death right?

And i know this may sound like a dumb thread weather or not the fish is gonna hump to death the other, but you guys are the only ones I can imagine knowing the answer...

He swims up along side the other one and starts snapping his body kinda like a whip.

The other one tries to swim away and he follows. Some times he corners the little one and does the motion.

Hes not bitting or nipping the little fish. I think I read some where here or another forum this was how they mate.

Can you post pics of both of them? We should see if they are male/female and then go from there.

The large Seneal is without a doubt male. He has a very large muscle over his anal fin and has swam around numerous times with it "cupped"

The little one seems too small to tell but here is a pic of his/her rear end to see if it helps.

sounds to me like your senegal is being territorial with the ornate and attacking it. How big is your tank? Are there enough hiding spots?

It's a 56 column, there is plenty of low live vegitation and two large fake mangroves for hiding.

I didn't know bichirs could be territorial. First time I hear it :(

Then again I have seen bichirs "fight" and they do bite each other.

There is no biting involved though, he simply throws himself on the little one and "head bangs".

If its territorial its not very big display,It sounds more like an immature bichir practicing breeding frisky lil felow-Anne

Ann do you think this could be something to worry about? Again the other bichir's death could have more likely been petsmart syndrome or a bad feeder or w.e...

I'm just drawing the the two together in my head...

By the looks of it not many people have this kind of "energizer bunny" bichir issue....

They were lip lock like betta fighting. I think your bichirs will be fine as long as you're not seeing biting. I have a crazy polli palmas that swim across the tank and then swim downwrd slamming everyone into the gravel.
