Anyone have this problem? I can see what looks like white fungus growing on my african driftwood. What is this and how do I eliminate it? I have never seen it before on any of my other driftwood, just in the planted tank. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

This happens on some varieties of driftwood. Is it a whitish cloudy looking slime (basically looks like snot growing on your wood *ick*)? If that's the case, then it's pretty normal, and harmless to your fish. In a few weeks it will go away on its own, or you can take a brush and scrub it off and siphon it out (as it will clog your filter) to get rid of it. It's not uncommon with new pieces of wood that were once submerged, then dried out, and then submerged again. It also happens a lot with grapewood.

Some plecos and Corys actually eat it.

Ok, thanks for the info. It is actually like a fuzz though. If it is the same as you are talking about, I wont worry then. Thanks again.

Not necessary. It'll go away within a couple of weeks.

I got that on one of the driftwood in my 235gal. It went off by a week or two. It looked like the Ancistrus ate it, but I'm not sure.

No, that is a fungus, methylene blue should kill it if you want to go that route.

Howdy,
That is fungus, not the "good" kind. Are you sure this wood is safe for aquarium use? I would not treat the entire tank with fungizide! Instead, take the wood out, scrub it down real well, and boil it for 10 min. If the fungus comes back, I would think twice about putting it back in. Even if you treat with fungizide or sterilize by boiling, the wood remains to be the problem. Fungus comes back, if it has food ...

I was told but not recommended to try this, add 5 teaspoons of aquarium salt to the tank, well so far most of my algea and alot of the fungus are gone, all fish survived, woo hoo.
