You can buy the mounting pieces (for x-mas lights) or staple the cord onto a piece of plywood with a staple gun.

take a string of christmas lights ($1.88) and tape them on the inside of your hood and just leave them on 24 hrs a day so when you turn off your daylights wahlah

I've also seen the strips of lights used. But they had problems with the mositure messing them up so they covered them in hot glue to waterproof them.

I think covering them would be the safest option. Either hot glue or silicone.

the ones for cars

go to lowes buy a clear plastic tube

if they dont sell it buy it from a photo store or walmart someone sells them i have a bunch

put the led car light in the tube

cap one end with a small piece of acrylic

cap the other end with cord with silicone

all set

works well

Search "moonlight" on this forum and you'll have plenty of ideas and examples.

Or just type LED i'm just about to start a DIY myself i've posted a pic of 6ft tank on one of those threads, its got no hood and really awful 5ft luminaire which lets too much into the room, so its getting sold, hopefully! So now its time to plan how to build th ehood and add the lights.

dont staple it , i tried and every 2nd light broke
instead use those coaxial cable holders , you can get them in 99 cent store , they have different sizes , it fits perfectly . I gotta get lights out of my balcony ,and fish my hood , cause i got just so much vaporizing going on

Yes, i'd add to that to use the 2Watt LEDs, for 1Watts will not give enough light to penetrate the water.
And get a timer, save some money.
And beware, you'll become a fulltime fish- insomniac though.
i have to be told to go to bed like a lil' kid sometimes, for i can't get away from my tank with the nightlights.

Do you have to use Daylights and then LEDS at night? I really only want one lighting system!

I have just done this with my xmas lights, for the time being until I work out how i'm gunna fix them I have just hung them on the wall behind the tank. The fish become silhouettes but it still looks pretty cool.

Does no one read any of the previous postings?
This thing has been done to death.
How many times is the same thing going to be done, using the same lighting, and expecting different results.

We, as a race, love reinventing the wheel. So I'm not even going to mention the cheap blue rope light that I bought at Kmart.

KaiserSousay, I have to say that everyone has different ideas and no maybe people have not read different posts. But if someone starts a new thread then of course people are going to try and help. NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES ITS BEEN DONE.

The whole point is to get advice from people who are trying new things.

Sorry but that post is very constructive.

So, if you don`t want to look into similar postings , on the same subject.
Fine, go ahead and rush out. Buy some X-mas lights, do a bunch of work, only to get the same results everybody else already got.
That was my point.
I guess it is a whole bunch easier to throw a new posting, than take the extra time to see if others have already traveled down that road.
Even if you say to yourself..Heck, I can do better than that..at least you have seen any mistakes they have made.
That is called history, and those that do not read it, are doomed to repeat it.
Got that sparky.
And I agree with you,
but that post is very constructive.

I gotta agree with kaisersoussay but at the same time, sometimes you find an old thread with no activity so it can be good to start a new thread. there is so much info here that you miss out on alot if you dont do searches. I try and look at the historical info before I post a question thread so that I can ask a more informed question. Easily half my questions are answered by searching.
On the topic of christmass lights though, Id encourage caution. although they are often rated for outdoor use and can handle the elements/moisture, they are not designed to be bunched up like they might be for an aquarium application. this could be dangerous.
good luck and proceed with caution

I'm glad you agree with me, history is fine and reading up on what people have done before. However what if someone has done the process differently, then maybe it deserves a new post. Why the hell you wasting your time going through old posts to then just moan about them!

Anyway, sod it agree to disagree and all that.

Ya searching is good, I have kept myself from starting threads by searching dozens of times, but its kinda hypocritical to say "Its so easy to find it with a search" & not post a link. Practice what you preach and whatnot.
P.S. no offence meant to anyone
