I'd say they are closer to 24 inches since I use the same tubs as you and here is a pic of a 3 foot lung fish in one:

36 inchs is 3 feet, that would be a monster Koi, 24 inches is big as it is. No offence here either.

I know somebody who has koi in a huge pond. It is about a 1/2 acre or so and he has koi in there that are easily 36". Although he has had them in there for I think 15 years. He has some pure white butterfly ones at I would say over 3 foot.

VERY COOL... LIKE YOUR BUTERFLY
As with all fish give them a varied diet. Pellets can make up the bulk of there food, just us several types, (IE growth, color enhancing, medicated, and general). Koi will eat fruits and veggies as well. Grapes, peas, zuchinni, corn, etc. Try worms for protein too. I've heard of people using hard boiled eggs as well, but just the whites. Pretty much anything fresh and healthy koi will eat.

The black one would be a bit harder to see in the water, but at least you got some killer koi. At first when you said the black got sucked into the leaf skimmer, I just laughed and thought about burley. But good to hear he aint dead.
http://www.kloubeclive.com/ The place goes through hundreds of pounds of pellets per day feeding just 1 pond of koi.
