first off let me say im not interested in making hybrids but i want to have a pair of arge cichlids for my 125g and see the behaviour.
what is another good fish to pair up with my male midas in terms of being able to handle its aggression b/c this fish is absolutely nuts. he is constantly attacking **** for no reason...rocks, glass , wood(even the back of the glass thats painted black)
he dosent bother my small loaches and such thuogh....which is cool.
also...i was thinking of buying a nice cichlid on aquabid but i dont want to get a fish thats 300 dollars only to get killed by him.
what are the chances he will kill a female. i also have alot of rocks/wood for her to hide...and whats the best way to introduce.
(i dont want to set up a seperate tank if things dont work out. i only want one tank)

my midas will not tolerate anything alive in its tank. if you want to experiment, try a couple of convicts. alot easier on the wallet.

he hated other large male cichlids i had... but tolerates the following....
african knife (he dosent even tough it and it tends to hide behind him from protection from the nasty loaches)
8 skunks loaches
2 polka dot loaches
1 rainbow shark
1 baby female convict
1 baby male jack dempsey
1 large pimelodus gracilis

get a female red devil, midas, or blood parrot. use a divider when introducing. easy as that.

basically until the male pairs up w/ the female. but then again devils and midas are known to beat up their wife randomly. if the female is smaller cut a hole in the divider big enough for the female to go through. that way you won't lose any fish.

yea just leave the divider up til hes used to her. :iagree: with the leave the divider up idea and give her some extra caves and plants to hide in just in case

Always a good idea to find a female mate larger than the male too - this will give her more of a chance of sticking up for herself while they get used to each other but gurantee within a few months the male will be larger no matter what size the female is, he will eat more and his hump will become larger to make sure of it, lol.

I agree. My breeder midas where always paired off as a smaller male with a much larger female.

Fish is already quite big so if you can, find the smallest female possible. Reason is, he won't feel as threaten from a smaller fish.

But it wont take long for a male midas to kill a smaller female just by going through the breeding rituals . . If you intend on introducing a female midas i definitely advise it to be larger than the male, once he knows it's female he shoud not feel threatened .
