He he I had an Alligator gar a few years back it got so big it could not turn in the tank in the end I was feeding him Roach and smelt Dead baits from the tackle shop. Thing was ravenous really cool fish my one got to about 20“.They are one of the monsters of fresh waters. They can reach lengths of up to 10 feet and weights of more than 200 pounds. I have been told Females grow faster, bigger, and live longer than males. You have got a few years with him before the London Aquarium ends up with him. As it happens I think my one is up for sale again he is about 2.5 ft now could be bigger.:D

i thought aligaters were all one colour on top . and florida spotted ' so to me it looks like a florida. i am a newbe so thanks for puting me right as i am looking for a florida. would i be right in saying a aligater gar has two rows of teeth
stotty
10-12-2006, 4:26 PM
This was my old Aligater gar the only pic i have.
(Cuban gar and tropical gar are similar to alligator gar—i.e. two rows of teeth—but they occur in Cuba and South America) by the presence of two rows of large teeth on either side of the upper jaw in large young and adults. Coloration is generally brown or olive on the upper body and may have a spotted pattern. Their bellies and undersides are lighter colored.

10-12-2006, 6:59 PM
Gators are a totally different colour, they have smaller spots, and MUCH wider snouts. Floridas and spotted have very slender snouts, a gator's snout is almost as wide as it's body, and it's snout is slightly shorter.
And yup, 2 rows of teeth.
thanks rumblesushi thats some good info

Yes, they are very well feed.
They were a lot larger when first put into the tank but have slimmed down extensivly since then. The smallest of the three is by far the fattest since he is still adjusting to haveing a constant food source in the tank with him at all times. I have droped the temp a few degrees in the tank and limited the amount of food for the winter so by summer they will half the size you see here. This has worked very well for me in the past and when spring hits they grow like crazy especialy once the summer months roll around. Aslo just measured the fish, the largest is 3/4 longer, and the samallest Gar is an inch longer from last months measurements. Have not gotten a measurement on the middle sized Gar as he hangs out in the back of the tank as of late.

thx guys..i've heard from this forum someone said that its a shortnose,,probabbly u Solomon. i was always not sure about it and its always better to have more input coz in my head short nose has spots and sharper nose. but this one has a nose like a gator and apparently spotles. could it be a hybrid???i'll get a better n closer pict when i got the time..thanks a lot for the comments..
understandable to get some more opinions...
...however, i have seen dozens and dozens of shortnoses in the wild AND in captivity and i assure you this is a shortnose gar. they can be highly variable, moreso when they are smaller juveniles, but at the size you have, this is what a typical shortnose looks like, especially compared to wild counterparts. the nose broadens out, and generally they will lose their spots--
