hi guys.
i need some input on what is the best media for this kind of filtration.

basically this dodgy contraption is as follow.

i have 2 cannister filtering 260g tank, but i found that they are struggling to keep the water clean, so as the cheapest solution i can think of was to utilise 2 milk crates stacked on top of each other on top of my tank, with the bottom crate 1/3 filled with bio cubes? and surrounded by fine wool.

the top crate is again 1/3 filled with coarse sponge (bottom layer) and the same fine wool (3 layers).

the 2 crates is sitting on top of my tank and the return hoses of the 2 cannister feeding the water.

i've noticed after 3 days running, my water seem to clear up a bit.

now are there any suggestions on how to improve the performance? as i was thinking to completely remove the 2 cannisters and replacing them with a single pump later on.

note , i know it look ugly but since the tank is in my garage and quite high up, i don't really care about the look. as long as i have a nice clean water all the time.

thanks for reading my 'newspaper' lol and please give me suggestion:grinno:

on the second tray maybe fill completely with bio balls or add potscrubbies atop the bioballs

i was thinking of doing that, but it won't have the effect of 'shower' anymore, plus these milk crates can only be filled to a max of 1/3,coz above that they are full of holes.

put the bio media you plan on using in filter socks or some other type of aquarium safe bag. i would definetly get some scrubbies if i were you though more bio media is the best way to keep a tank prime

it's not the bio balls spilling out that i'm worried about, it's more like water going everywhere. also with the bio balls or srubbies, are they better performing if they are partly submerged or not? coz the milk crates won't allow any water to stay in them, it just flow through.

put (a l f a g r o g) in there for some reason if i spell it with the letters next to each other it blanks them out, and youd wonder what the hell i was on about LOL, its basically porus ceramic filter media its good stuff koi owners use it alot in ponds and is affordable in quantities you need

haha lol... what in the world 'grog' will do to clear up my tank..lol JK.. aren't they expensive? and will a crushed bricks or porous concrete do the same job? but also bear in mind that they are sitting directly on the glass, so i have to keep the weight to a minimum

with all the weight of the water i wouldnt put it straight on the glass i would make a stand personally or a timber frame around it and put it in frame supported by itself and wont stress the glass in any way. dnt use bricks on any cocncrete or anything with cement in unless want new fish!!!!!

thanks for all of the info so far guys, i will post a pic or two of the setup to get a better view of what i'm talking about
