View Full Version : I Found a Baby Ray!

I came home from work today to find a baby motoro ray! I was pretty sure the female was pregnant and she had her first pup, a liter of 1. The little guy seems healthy, swimming around freely. I had to drive 100 miles to the LFS to buy some black worms which I fed to the ray. The ray didn't seem too interested yet as he's still too young. I am too tired right now to set up another tank (50g) for the ray so he'll have to wait until Friday before the tank is ready. I didn't get back from the city until 10:30 pm and I have to get up at 6:30 to go to work.

Would it be okay to leave him in the big tank with the parents and a few other tankmates (see list below for 320g) for a couple of days? I guess he doesn't have much choice until his new home is ready. I hope the other fish leave him alone (especially the 10" pbass).

I'll try to borrow the school camera tomorrow and take some pictures of my first baby ray!:grinno:

Congrats! 100miles? Now thats some dedication!!!! :headbang2

If you need to keep it in the main tank I would actually place it in a smaller self contained container within the tank to protect it from being nibbled on by the other tankmates.

Congrats! Please put more effort into assuring his survival, no time is an upsetting excuse. A divider, a container, you can even float a milk crate in the tank for him/her.

Place some drift wood in there or make a cave he can hide in.

Sorry, I was responding to the statement in red. I guess I meant to say, awesome about the pup! That sucks to have to drive 100 miles! And, personally I would remove him or at least divide him off so he is safe, I would not risk it for second, it is known that larger rays will attack small rays.

Your right about trying to get him out as soon as possible. I guess I was a little too tired to think straight when I criticized you. Sorry about that.

I got the 50g tank set up today using the original tank water and scooped the little guy out of the big tank with a pail, worked like a charm. He's now nice and safe in his 50g grow out tank, swimming around. Once he's a little bit bigger, he will go into the 270g tank.

And even better, I look in the corner overflow and what do I see ... another baby ray swimming around! I'll have to wait until tomorrow to get this one out as I have to remove the durso pipe to get at him. He should be safe inside the overflow (he has been so far). How he got in there, I don't know but that makes 2! :headbang2

This thread just keeps getting better and better. Any more rays?

I removed the durso pipe without causing a flood today and removed the second ray and placed him into the 50g. They are both now safely transferred into their new home. I have tried feeding them black worms but they don't seem too interested yet. I guess they are still too young. I have read that it takes them a few days before they start eating. They are swimming around and are active so they should be okay.

I have seen them trying to cover up with gravel in the big tank the same day they were born, as well as suction cupping themselves to the walls. It's like they were born programmed to know how to act as if they were little adults - quite the survival instinct. Rays are so cool!

If he doesn't start eating too soon, try 1.5 lbs. of salt (or 3 lbs. per gallon), upping the temperature a little, darkness and if it gets bad enough, uncoated Vitamin B1 has worked for us.

I'm glad to hear he is safe. Can't wait to see some pictures of your new little water monkey. :)

best would be to let him soak up his yolk sack and for pups i wouldnt do anything over 1 pound per 100 gallons....

Okay, I'll wait and see what happens for a few more days. I am sure they are still a little stressed from being caught and moved to a new tank. I will continue to put black worms in with them so that they are available when they are ready to eat. As they are still so young, I am reluctant to change the water parameters too quickly. But I don't want them to starve either. Geez, I'm starting to stress out over these little guys! Thanks for the advice everyone, it is much appreciated.

I will keep doing water changes every second day, just like for the big rays. I am just reluctant to add salt and play with the temperature of the tank when they are only a few days old. I'll wait a few more before adding a little salt (if needed). Your definitely right about keeping the water as clean as possible and I will continue with the water changes.

as long as they are not breathing heavy i wouldnt wworry on salt...a small tonic treatment wont hurt.. do about a 1/4 pound in that 50... and as far as temp increasing it wont cause any problems either...

Driving a hundred miles for black worms is pretty committed.
