I think it's because of inbreeding that more and more ""batman" rays are occuring. Not sure it's a good thing...

Not always from inbreeding IMO. Ive got a batman hybrid from two different types of rays.

I agree with you about not being sure it's a good thing.

The deformity could be due to pollution during the early stage of pregnancy. Some form of toxic in the water i.e heavy metal, medication or some other contaminants that affect the embryo's growth. The water parameters might been corrected and back to acceptable condition soon after that enabling the pups to survive.

on top of that.... normally all the rays are batman.... not just a couple of them.... and guys... its not from inbreeding.... its just a genitic deformity, and when two rays that have it get together... its what happens... kinda like red hair.... if one parent has the gene in them... it has the potental to being passed down

on top of that.... normally all the rays are batman.... not just a couple of them.... and guys... its not from inbreeding.... its just a genetic deformity, and when two rays that have it get together... its what happens... kinda like red hair.... if one parent has the gene in them... it has the potential to being passed down inbreeding magnifies genetics over time.. which is why people inbreed a certain color or shape of fish they like, in order to increase the amount of young that are born with that phenotype. so when someone says "this is due to inbreeding" they ARE saying this is due to "genetics".

Now there is no way to tell if it really is genetics, or water conditions, or other environmental conditions which are causing this. But with this newest case with part of the litter being batray and part of the litter being normal I would put my money on a recessive gene or partial dominance gene. (PS I would love to know the sex of the batrays and non batrays in both litters.) Like I said in the other thread Im sure a biology program at a university nearby doing research in genetics would love to look further into this if anyone would be so kind to let them take dna samples from there pups and parents and other rays.

I hope these aren't being bred for the trait.

Depends on the species anywhere from hundreds to thousands....
