A good DIY filter for Saltwater would be Live Rock + Powerhead. :)

A good DIY filter for Saltwater would be Live Rock + Powerhead. :)

liverock has all the essential bacteria that a reef tank needs for efficient filtration. the powerheads pump the water through and around the LR so that the bacteria gets maximum contact with the water. thus filtering out all the bad chemicals like ammonia and nitrate.

live rock plus a plenum, or deep sand bed. that seems to work well!
