If you have at least one light tube it should work. I think grass can be easily dug up from the lawn and replanted in the substrate.

like a regular tube light(fish tank one) ?
is there a way to do it where the dirt dont go in the water of the tank

Actually, two tubes would be best. By the way, did you mean alligator gars when you said 'gators'? Or do you mean alligator snapping turtles? Dirt from where? The grass? If so, I suggest you simply rinse the grass (including the roots) a few times in de-chlorinated water before planting. The worst of the dirt should have been eliminated by then. :)

I see. If your gravel is small grain I don't see why not. Anyway, you may like to add some floating plants like water hyacinth or water lettuce; they work well with alligators.

you could use a flourescent light for your tank it will work good and make the tank look awsome. :hitting:

how would i get the grass out of the sod?
i was thinking of maybe sand
and there would be a heatlamp over it, would that affect it ?

If the grass is not too near the heatlamp it should be alright.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is 'sod'?
