View Full Version : Black Piranha question
Hi. I'm planning to get some wild 8 cm. Black Piranhas(Serrasalmus Rhombeus) based on what I have read they do better in solo tanks. Let's say I get 6 of these guys, can't I really put them all together in one tank? Thanks in advance.

Yes, like they said, the Serrasalmus is a solitary species and only in the wild would they shoal. Either way, having one would be tight all by itself.
Thanks guys, so what do you suggest for the tank size?

A 29g could house a solitary 3" rhom for several years. 55g could house it for 6-8 years.
rhom = black piranha
its a common name for rhoms, there are many variants of rhoms however....highback, peruvian black, etc.....gets a little confusing

Kido - they are known as sloow growers. So get a bigger one if you can.
BTW - Ps are not exactly legal in PI are they? :uhoh: :D

i have a black piranha and they do not do well together. i sold one of them and kept the smaller of the two. it is very tame. there is a smaller pacu in the same tank that is always kicking his butt.

pacu's gonna be big enough to swallow it whole in another 2 months...

your other fish will be food for your p soon. rhoms are fin and scale nippers and will harass other fish until there are no fins left then the target fish dies of starvation because it cant swim around to get any food.

naw, you'd be surprised at how well fish can swim without fins, they certainly can't swim AS well as they could but they can get around fairly well. the target fish dies from the psychological and physiological stress of the attacks

lol ive over many different serra species and never seen one act as a scale biter, but fins definitely.
people claim exodons are scale eaters too but ive never seen that behavior when i was shoaling 8 of them last year.

I hate it when they change the names, dan, try to change your pic to a jpg file, do you have a picture it, or photo shop function? The jpg file is MUCH smaller.

Serrasalmus Rhombeus is a "Black Piranha" Serrasalmus Niger is no longer used as the scientific name for the Black Piranha because there are soo many different type of them. Also, If you had a tank say 500-1000 gallons, you could shoal 5 of them. But why waste 1000 gallons on 5 fish ehh? Just stick to 1 solitary rhom...and when he's old enough, put him in a 125 for life!

No way Jos'e You put them together and they will try to kill each other. It will be a constant fight . As for S.Niger it does not exist S.Rhombeus is the scientific name for Black Piranha The Piranha turns black as it matures S. Niger is a mature S.Rhombeus ,look it up Then agian Ichtheologist could be wrong. I have never seen a 1inch black Piranha. They have all been silver with spots. Once they reach 9 or 10 inches you have nasty mean fish on your hands so be careful when arrangig decor in your tank or you could recieve a nasty bite

If you plan on keeping the fish 10 plus years 125 gal is perfect . Make it a planted tank with black gravel or sand and drift wood ,power heads he will grow and be very happy. Dont just feed him gold fish they like worms ,shrimp, raw fish pieces.
55 gal is ok up to 6inches

If the Black Piranha are as passive as the Red-Bellies when fed, why couldnt you mix them?
They are Territorial with feeding competitors and it only takes one good bite to cripple one then the others eat it. Same is true of the S. elongatus dammit. I would love a few of those but would eventually just have one.

The Rhombeus is the Black Piranha. There is no such a species as the Niger ( Niger's Piranha is the Serrasalmus Rhombeus a.k.a Pirana NEGRA..
Serrasalmus Rhombeus Highback ( mostly found in Peru turned Jet Black in color when adult ) I have 17" Highback and is completely black. I also have 3 nine inch rhombeus and they are dark grey just turning black. Serrasalmus Rhombeus is white in color when young with yellow and red coloring on the chest.
