I'm looking getting a senegalus soon (once tank is cycled etc) and am wondering if it would be better by himself or should I get some tankmates for him. Tank is 48 x 18 x 18 - 65 gallons.
Was thinking about congo tetras, pantodon butterfly and a synodontis catfish.
Good or not?
they will be his food haha

sounds like good tankmates tho some tetras may go missing after the bichir grows some

Synodontis catfish. are not a good tankmates for bichirs. They are a lot more worst than pleco. I used to have a feather fin synodontis and it keep rasping on the slime of my bichirs and gars.

And i have had the this combo and they were all fine together. The whole thing boils down to each indiviual involved
i think the butterfly will do.

:iagree:
Kept Synodontis ocellifer and Synodontis eupterus with senegals before and never had issues.
Chris, what species is your syno? :welcome: to MFK by the way!

Don't have a syno yet, tank is still cycling. Am wanting to make sure I don't make any stocking mistakes as poly's are quite expensive here - $130 nz dollars, and would prefer not to lose anything prematurely.

Get more bichirs of similar size! Try a delhezi

Not sure if we can get them over here, have only seen senegals and ornates. I know we can't get polys that have the prominent lower jaws, for some strange reason.
I don't think my tank is large enough for an ornate either  my lfs has one ornate that is about 4inchs long, he is quite awesome looking, but my chances of getting him a bigger tank later are pretty slim.

They will work except the tetras. I tried congo tetras once, and my bichirs went after them. Even though they couldn't eat them whole, they will grab them, kill them, then rip em' apart.

Hmmm - at $13 per congo over here it could be an expensive way of feeding them, not to mention a bit messy:eek:
Silver dollars are better.

For midwater schooling fish that really is the better option, unless you scap that and just go with a pair of Thysochromis or some other african riverine cichlid
