Their teeth are in the jaw line. The "teeth" you see are actually bone, they are why this fish belongs to the Osteoglossidae family, or bony-tongued fish. So yes when you got bit, they were on the outer rim of the mouth, and it does hurt.

Aros are Osteoglossiforms, which means bony-tongued fish.
Why are they called bony-tongued? Are their tongues really bony and hard??
