I got my O. niger 2-3 months ago. I understand they grow slow but mine rarely comes out enough to eat. I find it out at night but i have to shut off the filters and overkill with bloodworms to get him to eat. He hangs out bewteen to pieces of driftwood all day. I make sure he eats at least once a week. Is there anything i can do short of unpluggin the lights to get him to come out and eat more? I know he doesn't do much but is once a week feedings ok for a 6-7" cat? What does everyone else feed theres?
Mine eats hikari carnivore pellets, blood worms, and shrimp pellets. Will he eventually come out and eat with the others? any and all additional info is appreciated.

Mine actually grew fast up until 2' then began to slow down. When I got him at 4" he was somewhat shy but began to eat sinking pellets with gusto soon after. I would certainly try to feed him more. Mine wasn't very picky and would eat a variety of pellets. You may also want to try shrimp.

Mine is the same way, I've never seen him out during the day. I feed about 1/2 hour or an hour after lights out. My niger comes out, sucks down a bunch of pellets, and then returns to his cave. If I come out in the middle of the night when the house is pitch black he is sitting out in the middle of the tank.

I would recommend feeding after lights out. If you like to feed during the day so you can watch your fish eat you could just throw in some sinking pellets later on.

It is a nocturnal catfish, not much can be done about that.Mine hides behind driftwood all day unless I drop in pellets which he does not get much of because the giraffe cat is super active and always greedy. Some of the best looking cats are hiders in the tank because they are nocturnal and dont like the light.I wouldnt waste bloodworms on them though.
