anyone successfully introduce another breed to your pirahna tank? just curious as i was told they do well with oscars, jack dempsies, a few other cichlids, and red devils.
our babies are always hiding so it looks like the tank is just empty so we added 2 red devils to our tank last night. one of them has had his tail nipped a bit. the reds are significantly larger than my rb's. i have 3 rbs. the red bellies are just babies @ only barely and inch. the red devils are about 2.5" and 3" and much larger. one of them is definately trying to declare dominance in the tank (the larger red devil). however, he's the one with the munched tail.
just wondered if anyone else had other types in with their pirahna and how successful you were.

Some people have luck with mixing other fish with piranhas, others don't. Very fair chance that either the cichlids eventually kill the piranhas, or vice-versa. There are no guarantees in these setups. I wouldn't get too attached to anything kept in a piranha tank, piranhas included.

i was able to keep a tank of 2 rb, 1 pacu, and 2 oscars. they got along fine, but when one of the rb got injured the uninjured one tended to harass it every now and then. only reason i had to seperate them was they got to big for the tank after a couple of months.

thanks for the replies! dunno if the red devils are gonna stay roomies with my rbp's for long or not. i have two red devils and each one of them has claimed a separate corner of the tank and rarely move from thier respective corners as if they are scared to move. not even at the rbp's stay right in the center of the tank behind a plant. if one gets too close to a red devil, the devil chases it off. seems ok, but each of the red devils have been munched on.
ive said it before and ill say it again, ive had piranhas for quite some time and the only tankmates that are 100% successful are:
gravel
rocks
plants
driftwood
thats about it

I have kept other fish with p's but you never know, things can be fine for months and one night they go nuts. As an example I had several red bellies at approx 5" that after about three months ate my 11" pleco. All that was left was an empty head.

Agreed. You can certainly try but being that home aquaria is so small it wont
be long before something goes wrong. I saw a pleco being slashed into 2 by Ps.

eventually anything else put into a piranha tank will be food. i had a 1.5" sanchezi in a 60 gal with 6 exos they got along fine for about a week then in a span of about 3 weeks all my exos were getting harassed or were getting eaten by the p. the way i see it everything else is food for p's

if you rbs are bigga nuff you can put neons in with them the rbs won't be interested because the neons are to small

If you keep them well fed, you should be able to house other fish succsesfully, but it is a gamble. . .
