rayman45,
Is there a formula or guideline that govern's the volume of the sump/wet,dry/trickle filters?...
Or maybe one of those catchy pharses that this ol' dood can remember... :headbang2

All glass makes a sump for a 240 that is inexpensive and quite good IMO. i run it on my 300 with 2 other filters.

common formula used is sump volume capacity = 1/3 main tank capacity

5`x15"x15" would be good but it all depends on stocking levels and the kinds of fish you intend to keep.

I have a 30"x12"x12" wet/dry with no overflow box. just drilled the holes on the back of my 240gallon and ran pvc's to my sump.
no problem with power outages. in fact, when there is a power outage, i have check valves on my return pipes and my sump barely, and i mean barely holds all the water when my tank drains from an outage.

Boy, am I glad I stumbled onto this thread. I'm preparing to plumb a 200 with corner overflows and this looks like it will help. Thanks.

The way I understand it is the bigger the better. Whatever fits under the tank. I have the one from All-Glass. It isn't all it is cracked up to be. it is fairly noisy, the two lids are warping, and you can't have any sags in the drain hoses. In addition the prefilter is to restrictive and the media trayt overflows unless you cut the flow way back, the pump resevoir has a bubble filter before it with an additional divider, high evap. rate. I have to add water to the sump every couple days. I worry about the pumps running dry.

I think that the size of sump you need depends largely on what bio media you use. The higher surface area the media has, the smaller the sump needs to be.
If you're gonna use pot scrubbers and bio balls you will need a bigger sump than if you use Eheim Substrate or Bacteria House, however, these do cost a lot more.
