Well, they grow faaast :D :headbang2
I will be updating this thread on the growth of this particular endli out of the two I have. This guy/girl is growing very fast, and seems determined to be monster.
1" in 1 week! Check out the regrowth of the external gill too.

Are you feeding twice a day? These endlis are the fastest I've seen.

No dude, only once a day, and not that much. Between the two baby endli and the spoon, I feed 1 small shrimp chopped into small pieces.

I'd say so too, this will be interesting to see if the growth is steady, sporatic, etc...

Good question, the answer is, I don't lol
I leave the ruler resting against the tank and whenever I'm in my room, I keep an eye out to see when it's resting with the tip of it's tail against the glass in that spot.
I've got him/her in a 10g grow-out for now, so it's easy. Once it's in the 120g, things will be a bit difficult.
Serg, your endlis are looking good bro ;)
Thanks brutha! I really like this one because I have been wanting one with a horizontal stripe since I saw pics from I think phulltank, or maybe another member, I can't recall right now.

Bro, I've been looking into shortbody endlis lately but their pricing and availability makes me go :nilly::nilly::nilly:

Keep it up. Most endli usually grow fast at 4-6 inches then slow down at 7-9". Then grow fast again at 10-12" and slow down again at 14-18" and even slower at 19"+
anybody know why the external gill grows back. i expeirenced this myself too. just curious.

They don't get feed that much in lfs and they are being kept in small tank. This lead to fighting and the external gills sometime gets damage. Once someone bought them in, they get enough food, good water quality and that's probably how the external gills start to grow back.

Another week, looks like only .5" growth.
What's interesting is that while the fish didn't grow as much lengthwise, this week it's girth has grown.
It seems as though the tail length grew the .5" while the body remained the same length, growing with girth.
Pic taken 02-21-09

In the pic below, you can see it ate a baby endli that was 1.5" smaller than itself :irked:
I moved the two orignal baby endli to the big tank with my other adult polys.
I wonder now what affect stress has on their growth. Took them a couple days to settle in, but their color and pattern looks great and they have settled in nicely.

It's sibling that also ate a 3" endli :(

Yeah I lost two, the two from you both were 4.5" and they each ate a 3" endli from Tongs! I found out the next morning.
At least I know though, you can't mix no matter how good you feed, I even fed before mixing the two to be 'safe'. The tail was sticking out so it didn't swallow whole, but it didn't choke and die, so that's good I didn't loose three or four.
Thank you for the horizontal stripe one, I owe you.

Nice progress! I also noticed in my endli growth rate project that they get longer then the girth start to get thicker and get longer again. The process keep on going on going till the growth rate slows down.
I have lost a plat endli before and that plat endli ate a 4" endli too. I was at Vegas at that time and my parents phoned me that 4 of my bichirs died, including the plat endli. They got suffocated from the slime coat of the dead clown loach that they tried to scavenged.
That is a stunning growth rate serg, but sorry about the two endli's.

Thank you pare, sorry to hear your story, that is tragic! I want CL's for this setup but it's hard to find the right size loach that they wont try to eat. I lucked out that the kid endli didn't die from eating the babies.

Thank you, I was actually stunned as well. This is only the second time I've raised endli, and I didn't record growth the first time around, so it's interesting to get a more detailed picture of how they grow.
As King-eL pointed out, they growth seems to have a basic pattern of 'stretch' then 'fill-in' then stretch again.

Is it just me, or are endli's more prone to cannibalism at a young age than other bichirs? Most of the posts I've seen are of an endli eating another bichir, and I've also read an article about a man who bred endli's, and noticed the babies eating each other rather rapidly. Can't say I've heard that same of other polypterus species...
Cohazard
03-14-2009, 10:00 PM
I would agree with you dickies, most of the cannibalism I've seen reported on forums at post larval sizes is done by endlis, probably because they need to have such voracious appetites to do all of the growing they need to do.
I believe though that cannibalism will be a common theme any a fresh batch of any polypterus species, as it has even been reported in senegalus recently by a newer member here.
They are all carnivorous so it really isn't much of a surprise.
