They're relatively common. It's probable that the lfs in your area just don't bring in a variety of cichlids from Central/South America.
There's a pond at the University of Hawaii where 5 stars breed like crazy. I went fishing this past Sunday and easily caught 8 of them. I gave them all away to a lfs.

No payment necessary. There's also Red Devils, Convicts and Jaguars in the pond. I didn't care much for the 5 stars but did pick up a really nice male convict with a hump and a med size red devil. The jags weren't bitting that day but did see a really nice one that was 7".
I'll PM you.

just to clarify, 5 star generals (also called 5 star jewels) are West African (same as red jewels) not CA/SA. :) there are 3 species of 5 star generals...Hemichromis elongatus, Hemichromis fasciatus and Hemichromis frempongii. I believe the most common is H. elongatus but the other 2 are somewhat rare with frempongii being the most rare I believe. I very rarely if ever see any of these species at an lfs in Indy so they're not very common around here. :)

The Uncle Bill's in Greenwood did have them at one time. I don't know if they still have any or not, but that is the only place that I have ever seen any around here.

Five Stars are somewhat rare. I see them from time to time at LFS, but they aren't as rare as istlanum, tetracanthus, grammodes, haitiensis, etc.

5 star generals are often called the one of the top 2 most aggressive cichlids. the other 2 in the top 3 would be Neolamprologus christyi and Nandopsis beani. I've never kept any of the 3 of these so I can't say from personal experience but that's what I've read.
the one that Repair has I believe is Hemichromis elongatus. Now that you mention it JD_Man, I do remember one time seeing several of them in a tank at that Uncle Bill's. they were in the same tank the oscars are usually in at the end of the row on the left side top row next to the "amazon setup".
ps. not sure if you guys know or have any interest but that Uncle Bill's has about a 4-5" mangrove jack that they're selling as a red datnoid. they moved it to the display tank next to the bagging station. they might have put $30 on it but if you tell them you saw it in the brackish tank for $20 they may give it to you for that. :D Of course sounds like Repair gets good deals there all the time anyway so he could probably get it even less. :p

yup, they are super aggressive. My 5* always pecks on my 2 oscar that I have which
they are atleast 10x bigger than his size. Pretty cool fish to have :)

if I remember right on how he told it to me, he has 3 that he bought as uropthalmus. 2 really are uros but the other is a barred midas. hogaboomorum from what I know haven't been around for a long time until recently when Jeff Rapps got them. amarillo would have a lot more yellow and for the record I really want some amarillo and know someone very close to breeding them. :grinyes:

How is this fish compared to butti? Like size and aggressiveness. From pictures, it really resembles butti or even looks like another butti sub-species. I hope i can find it here.

You should park at the far end of the parking structure. Just walk around the tennis courts and softball field. It's probably best to go on a Sunday since there's typically no parking cost and no classes in session. I'm not sure if there is a street name since it's on the campus. Just head near the Stan Sheriff Center and/or the baseball field.

Doesnt compare because the Kuffi gets so much bigger- these guys max out at 8" or less.....When growing up as a kid, they called them 5 spot cichlids
My Red tail Cat had him for lunch one day. The damn thing never grew as fast as the other Cichlids.
