Ime pretty much the same as any other gar, don't mind tank mates that wont fit in their mouths, they are also pretty rare. Grow very big and unless you were planning to have a couple thousand gallon tank it is best left to public aquariums. What size tank you going to have it in? :)

They would probably grow fast at the begining like the gator gars do then slow down a bit around 24"

to be honest, I think Cubans are nice. But I wont pay that price for them. Gator gars are king. and way cheaper in the USA. so why pay more for something that isn't #1.

Those can't be cuban gars for $15 because they go for $300-400 each. And they grow really fast. My buddy's grew from 7" long and 1" in diameter to over 18" long and 6" in diameter in 4 months. They get really fat and dark green. Very cool.

Next time I stop over to his house I'll try to get some pics, I think he has a digi cam over there.
was tempted, but called it off.

Cuban gars are generally more aggressive than all the other gar species with the exception of the alligator gar, which is the most aggressive. depending on when you get one, the growth rate will be different. with george fear's help we imported the first Cuban into the US in a looooong time about two years ago. i got it at about 11" and now its about 16". it has been fed well and kept in a decent sized tank (now its in a bigger one) and is nice and thick, but hasnt grown a ton.
i later got a second one which is close to 17" and is more aggressive than the smaller one. they are a great looking fish and as far as gars go they are the rarest. i'll post some pics a bit later.--

no problem man; they are great fishes. let me know if you need any more info on them, they are generally the same, in terms of basic care, as the other gars other than the aggression and size issues (their wild max is 6', although their captive max is probably around 3-4' and i have yet to see that in any photos or books).--

Gs cuban kinda slowed off around the 15 inch mark too. Appreciate the help. Ill think about it this week and if i get the itch i will get that Gar. Strange because gars dont usually appeal that much to me but theres something about the Cuban Gars.

Very nice pics, E_americanus! :) Thank you for sharing!
Sorry wesley, don't mean to derail... but what about Tropical gars? Atractosteus tropicus... temperment? availability/price? max size? (in captivity) etc.
Thanks!

Jack - not really sure myself. Tropical gars are one of the rarest gar ive heard. They are more expensive than Cubans ( theyre also rare , but not as hard to find as tropicals) . I believe husbandry is about the same for all gars. Meaty diet, big tank etc..
Funny thing is that George has a crapload of tropical gars a month ago and i just thought they were native gars. Didnt really pay attention till i saw a 9 inch piece costs 300 clams!
I really dont find tropicals visually appealing. Maybe the ones i saw are still small... But Cubans are def nice.... clean body with no markings and nice tail pattern! :headbang2
P.S - I didnt go for a Cuban. Got the ray instead. But i still have space in my tank so well see.

the Cubans are still the rarest and most expensive of the gars...although their price may be comparable depending on the size and availability. i can see why you like the Cuban as opposed to the tropicals, since the t-gars can look very similar to other species, and the Cuban obviously stands out.
all the larger tropicals have been sold in the US (only 5 were imported) and i believe there are still several smaller ones left. they are nice because they dont get as large as the other Atractosteus gars, and yes, they are also very rare around here...second rarest species in the world--

I believe G were selling his tropical at about the same price if not higher than the cubans. Agreed on why i like cubans better. They just look different from all the other gars .
There were a lot of smaller tropical gars crowded in a 30G tank. They look pretty much like natives cept for the black blotchy pattern in the body.

yeah, the t-gar pattern will change as they get older, but they arent quite as unique looking (especially to non-gar people) as the Cubans. the Cubans are about $350 each right now, and the t-gars are $150 each, the larger t-gars that were available were $299. so the pricing is comparable.
if you have space in that tank i still think you should go for a Cuban

the pic is from primitivefish.com :)
i think the confusion with the hybrid is related to the fact that the type of gar is listed on TOP of the picture of the gar. this is a Cuban gar, which you can see the label on top of the pic on the gar section of the site. below the pic it says 'hybrid gar' but that is in reference to the picture below it...which is of hybrid gars. hopefully that helps. you can always check the site for further clarification.--
