Is it possible to keep an arowana in a 72x18x24. I have an oportunity to recieve a 72x18x24 for next to nothing. I had a small siver arowana and it was killed by one of my oscars. I now have the oportunity to get a large tank for free. I would like to put a silver in there by itsself, bare bottom, huge filtration. Everyone states that min tank size is 72x24x24,... well will 6 inches really make a diffrence. All advice would be great. I really want an arowana, but i also want the fish to be happy with its living invironment
thanks
john
An aro would eventually outgrow that tank, but without a doubt take the tank. There are so many other cool species that could live in that size tank for life. It would be ashame to let something like that go. You could do a few pike, or other cichlids, or a ton of other cool species.

nope not big enough for a silver

Unfortunaley it is not big enough.
You could grow it out in it though.

get the cool deal tank, grow out 3 silver aro in there for a year and get a much bigger tank or make a pond. That's what I would do, and also throw in a couple of pbass.

if you're planning to start with a small silver, then you could probably use the tank for atleast 6months then you should start looking for a bigger one.

My black aro grew from 6" to nearly 2' in just over 2 years in my 5'x2'x2' tank. Any longer and he would have been touching front to back when trying to turn around. Silvers grow faster too.
As everyone else said, take the free tank, but plan on getting something over 3' wide.

it will be ok for a while in there, but will eventually need a new tank. If you dont take the tank call me!!! I'll take it lol
you really want at the very very very very very minimum a width of 2 feet
Take the tank...forget the aro... :)
An oscar killed an aro? Tough fish.

That would make a nice tank. The aro will outgrow it with time, but the tank should last 1 - 2 years. If you power-feed it closer to a year.
Arowanas are great, don't pass up the opportunity to get the tank, or own one of the best fish out there!

Well what I would do is take the tank and start growing out your aro in it, then move him to a temporary pond (rubbermaid). Take apart the tank and use the glass for the front of a 6'x4'x2' plywood tank. Which will give you enough room to house him for life at a decent price.

I would just take the tank, fill it use it for other fish for right now. Once you get a solid plan for how you are going to acquire your final tank then plan for about 1 - 1.5 years before that fish isn't going to fit any longer.

take the free tank, but like everyone has said you will have to go bigger after awhile. I talked to a guy who rises aros. over seas he said longer the tank the better. on width he likes to be about 6" wider then the fish.

I would imagine that you ment 6" wider than the fish is long.

like what most people said, get the cheap tank, grow the aro but replace later
