I saw this 5 inch dovii in the lfs store and I think she is a she. Is she? I hope, because my big boy dovii might get a lady for a try if she is. Sorry for the pics, she won't hold still.

Crap! I thought with the mustard color it was a female. Man, I don't want another male. Oh well.

100% male
I will take your word, but can you explain what I am missing. I thought the mustard coloring was a dead giveaway? I am not seeing any blue in the fins.

looks male to me, but need better pics to be 100% sure.
it seems to have dots running down the length of the body, below and above the bold lateral line, which makes me believe it's a male. my male doesn't have a whole lotta blue in it's fins either

the black spots , and i see some blue in the pics, the lighting with the white gravel could be taken away the color

male as it has the little dots past the horizontal line (on the top half of the fish). females can get dots on thier bellies but normaly not past the line.
these are not mine i stole them off the net but maybe it will help.
look above the thick black line that runs down the fish.

looks like male too...alot of spots/dots...i believe to be male...also could be a costa rican male dovii...that might explain less blue or just a very low grade male nic. dovii...but i don't believe in low grades for a pure specie..only if its a hybrid of some sort...keep it cause its still a dovii with no mix. :)

Oh well, I guess I will have to rehome him as he is in a "community" 240 gallon. I really prefer not to have him tear up my other fish. Oh, and since some of you asked, his tankmates are:
10 inch blackbelt
13 inch Jag
16 inch Silver Arowana
2 X 9 inch JD's
12 inch Butti
13 inch freshwater Barracuda
9 inch freddy
4 inch oscar
a few silver dollars
a couple of male cons
I think he will create havock with that group, even in an 8 ft tank.
Here are some shots.

I think it's 100% female. My Female which was thought to be a male until it got older had the same coloration. Here's pics for reference.
THESE PICS ARE THE SAME FISH. First pic is a baby shot of the female and the rest are shots when she is now 8"

well that throws a wrench in everything now, doesnt it. Ill bet if you only posted the first pic, 99% of those here, myself included, would have said male.
Nice looking female Cross127.

Thanks. My wife says they look like those evil twin fish from the little mermaid. Flotzem and Jetzem (sp?). They swim like that together all the time.
looks like a low grade male

I've had low grade Dovii in the past. There is a tremendous difference in their appearance.

Here's an older pic of him in another tank where he felt more comfortable. You can the lack of lateral lines and better colors.

Thanks. I will have to do some research. I didn't particularly plan on him because I am into cichlids, but he was in tank with cichlids and the lfs gave him to me for my 240. He seems to be doing well, but I am concerned about the food thing.
