I have a butti that is probably about 4-5" and it is constantly swimming at the glass with his mouth wide open and pressed up against the glass. What is this about? Is it maybe trying to attack it's reflection?

Nothing wrong, It's personality!

Could very well be trying to attack his reflection. Could even be trying to attack you.

Are you turning your light off at night? Could be from lack of sleep.. I killed some african cichlids this way when I first started keeping fish..

Mine is acting up too!... Keeps ramming the top-glass. I thought it was maybe after the algae but I'm speculating that it sees it's own reflection. MIght need help on this one.

I've had zillions of these beasts..have one huge one now...and they will do this constantly to fight their reflection.....better the glass then their tank mates

I think he probably wants to kill you for putting him in the tank with other fish.

I think its part of their personality. The old LFS that i worked at had a huge 14" butti that always did that to people walking by its tank thinking it would be fed. It was hilarious becuz little kids always got scared by it...
