View Full Version : RTBS bully!
My Red Tailed Black Shark bullies just about anybody. Only successful tank mates are Killies, and I can only keep a pair to avoid agression among them, corys, and a pleco. He even chases Barbs! Got any more ideas for midwater tankmates? He is still very small and I can't move him into my larger tank until he gets bigger.

Then you can just post about the other problem and then get that one solved.

I think I may get cyber slapped if I do that.

:iagree: The main problem with RTBS's is their high aggressiveness and territoriality. A group works better if you have space. But I'd reccomend at least 5 specimens. My 0.02 ;)
Best regards.

I thought that they are highly aggressive toward one another. When it gets bigger, I would like to add it to a tank where it will co-exist peacefully. Or get eaten, chomp!

I have been thinking since I got him, if he wants to chase other fish, then survival of the fittest. I just realized that that applies to him as well. He has terrorized pretty much any tankmates I keep with him including Barbs, Platys, Corys, and Killifish, so I figured, why not put him in the same situation? So I dropped it into my Largemouth Bass/ Tiger Oscar tank. It's doing well so far, there are lots of hiding places in there. But, if he doesn't look out, CHOMP. Survival of the fittest, live by it or die by it.

i had one a while ago and it was truly one of the meanest fish I had ever had. Great fish though.
I had one that was SUPER mean, even chased fish times his size.. My shovelnose got sick of it though and ate him..

The more of these, and other similarly sized labeos the better. My wife had 2 RTBS and a rainbow and a white fin shark. Since she upgraded tank size she now has 6 RTBS,1 Large 1 medium 4 small, 5 White fin sharks, 1 Large 4 small, and 1 Large Rainbow. Their aggressiveness is almost nonexistant. They do chase each other to an extent, but even that has become almost nil. They actually will school once they get to large numbers. Much better this way. The one RTBS that is medium sized has grown up with the other 3 large sharks, but got the shaft and alwasys picked on. Now that there are smaller ones he is healed up quite well, and is growing very rapidly.
MISSING: Have you seen this fish? Last seen in aquarium, with Largemouth Bass and Tiger Oscar. Suspects have been questioned, but deny involvement.

Filter replied in a bubbly manner: "I had nothing to do with the disappearance."

I have a newt that will every once and a while get fed up with his tank mates and crawl into the HOB filter. I'll open the top and there he is staring straight at me.

we had a statue in one of our old tanks that had a hole for putting a bubbler, to make it look like it had a waterfall. some of our Pangasius sharks thought it would be fun to hide in there. Took us like 2 hours to figure out where they had gone and 3 hours to get them to come out of the tiny little hole. It was the only hole in and out of the stupid thing. I saw them swimming behind the plastic that shaped where the bubbles went, thats how we figured it out. Never again will I have that kind of statue, nor that fish; they get into too much trouble.

bass might get him but the oscar will probably just whack him once or twice to teach him some manners and ignore him. Ive almost always had oscars and sharks together for decades and never had a problem

saves on the cost of a coffin.
Saved on the cost of pissing me off, chasing fish that are supposed to be semi-aggressive, just like he is. I will say that he never chased my Golden Wonder Killifish, Thats a tough little guy not to take crap from RTBS!
