Ok, for a 55 gallon tank, what do you guys believe is a strong enough canister filter (for an oscar..lot's o waste) that's not too expensive but still decent quality...website links would be helpful :grinyes: Thanks for any help given. Oh, and should I get a skimmer?...i'm a newbie at big tank filtratration :p

Oscars are such messy eaters - I suspect the canister filter would need too much maintenance.
I'd use an Aquaclear 500 (new model name 110) - they hold a lot of media and are easy to clean. I'd also use a second filter to help with load.

I scored a few of the uni star 2000L / Hr powerheads from www.aqauriumproducts.com.au for $15.00 each. I think they have them at the moment for $20 & $8 for a cannister to go with them. I have one of these in a 4ft tank with 2 oscars and it does really well. Although I do vac & waterchange weekly. Cant bear to see yuk in the tank. I have one each end of my 6ft African tank and dont have any problems

Well then again I never had any other brand of cannisters. I bought Fluvals once and the rest were hand me downs.

with oscars any filter would do fine but get a good gravell cleaner because they are messy eaters and they do have some big turds that will seep down in the gravel.
I would rather spend a little more money and get an eheim cannister filter .They are the best.

Get 2 AquaClear 110's. In one of them use double the amount of BioMax ceramic media, and use carbon in the other if you prefer. Get a powerhead and have it near the bottom of the tank, sweeping across the substrate.. This will help to keep particles suspended and have them be picked up by the filters.
Always gravel vacuum very well with these poop-monsters.
If you have a good petsmart, they will pricematch off their own website for like $40/ea.. Which is cheaper then canister filters that will easily get clogged with the Oscars waste load.
