View Full Version : snakeheads, ancient fish?
hi guys, just wondering how come snakeheads aren't included in the ancient fish category? i've always considered they were since they have those suprabranchial organs for breathing air :feedback:

Analogous features, like "lungs", do not define genetic relationships. Saying a snakehead belongs with bowfin is like saying bats should be classified as birds, because they both fly.
Everything in Superorder Teleostei is considered totally modern. Snakeheads are in Teleostei. This is a sheet a zoology professor handed out to me for one of my courses....
Being able to breathe atmospheric air by means of a labyrinth organ doesn't make a fish primitive or ancient.
thanks for the clarifications :)
i guess they just remind me of most jurassic fish like arowanas, bichirs, lungfishes and gars :y220d:

I feel they are Modern fish but we know they existed prior to the Africa-Asia divide hence there being Parachanna and Channa. Not sure what period that happened.

I read somewhere that Snakeheads are jurassic fish, but that's ok I just wanted to ask isn't Wolf fish a prehistoric fish? Correct me if I'm wrong, if they are why aren't they included in the Ancient Fish category since we have Wolf fish keepers and fans.
