Is the coloration different in wild fish?

yeah, in some cases. but not that documented really, i think wild specimens are more drab looking. some have a snake-skin sort of pattern going along the scales if you look very closely

That's certainly is one HUGE aro. Is it true they grow bigger in the wild? My guess is they do.

I've heard yes a million times, but I have heard of people with such well kept tanks, that are large enoug, that they can attain full size in an aquarium too. Although these aquariums are well over the 1000 mark for one aro.

you can never get that size in captivity... btw, it is illegal to catch a wild asian aro here...so it is very hard to actually find a photo. anyway, it wouldnt be as nice as the farm ones..because their scales, fins and barbels will always be bitten off or nipped.

I have never seen proof that wild aro are better then farm aro.
I am very much against keeping wild aro.

For the record tho, asian aro *can* reach 4 feet in home aquaria, however this is very rare and most aro's don't get much past 2 feet.. growth is super slow after that, like 1 inch a year.

I saw a 4 foot RTG in suma aquarium in japan.. Of course the tank it was in was more like a small lake. It was a monster tho, I can't imagine catching or moving a fish that large.

Moving a fish that large, and that strong, not to mentions valuable, would be very painstaking work. Of couse for someone to take the time to have such a big aquarium, and care so well for the fish that long would have to have all the necessary implements (money) to do so.

like you said perhaps it could grow that big. but would take a very long time. and def not in home aquariums. i most cases if an rtg grows to at least 2 feet in a home aquarium, it would have been a big achievement by it self.

............... I thought asian aros max out at 36" or 90cm even in the wild. So I doubt the arowanas you saw is 4 feet.

36" is thought to be the max size. However if you look at that picture I posted earlier in the thread, it definitely if over 36". While 48" is a little big, you never know. There always are the rare ones that break the record books.

well the suma aro was *definately* over 3 feet.. 4 feet might be a little exageration, but not much if it is..
biggest aro i've ever seen in my life..
my 2' rtg is considered the biggest asian aro on the west coast where I live, i've had many aro ppl go into shock over seeing how huge it is, I used to think it was big until i saw suma rtg..
now my rtg looks like a little baby

I've seen pics of 30+ inch aro's in home aquaria tho

It is illegal to fish for asian aros. So pretty difficult.

You can't eyeball it and say its definitely over 3 feet. Unless someone has a a tape measure or some type of an accountable scale in the picture I would still say 36" for max size and 39" if you belileve in freaks of nature but I'll be damned to see a 48" asian aro or close to it.

:iagree: , by my eyeball calculation, it's only 2.5 feet, maybe a little over

I would say its more like 34-36" now that I look at it. 2.5' is a little too small as it is about 3.5 times as long as that guys head. He would have a really small head. Although this may be a possibility.

Fry

also, remember his head is a good bit behind the front of the fish that we are looking at, it's a pretty thick fish

Lets leave it at this... That is a very impressive and very large aro, between the sizes of, lets see, between 30-36ish inches.

Sound good everyone??
