Is there a difference between a datnoid and a siamese tigerfish??? I have a fish book and it doesnt have dat's in it, but it does have the tigerfish, and they look exactly the same to pics on this site, except for instead of brown with black srtipes, they are yellow with black stripes. Is datnoid a completey different species, or is it just a short cut to typing siamese tigerfish?

In the "old days," the term "Siamese tigerfish" was generically used to refer to any of the two commonly available species, Datnioides microlepis or Datnioides quadrifasciatus. A third species, D. campbelli, was described but wasn't available in the hobby until very recently. Two additional species, Datnoides undecimradiatus and D. pulcher, were described in 1994 and 1998, respectively. Nowadays, there are five recognized species of Datnioides with differing native ranges, so the term "Siamese tiger" only correctly refers to one species, Datnioides pulcher.

LOL!

Nah over here, everything is just datnoids. People dont even know the differences between the species.

There were four monster datnoids around 14-16 inch. He said I had a choice of the four, so I took to the 2 pulchers. He didnt know there was a difference....

Hey steve, I've done a bit of research on the dats in australia(whether its legal or not to keep them) i've found it's legal if you have a proof of purchase or a copy of the breeders permits. They are ilegal to import and it's illegal to own imported dats. Then there's the price! their more expensive than saratoga's! 3"-4" $240-$280, 11" was $1200

Do you have any info that contradicts mine? prices you've found?

Mate the price is whatever the seller wants to sell them for.

They are quite rare.

The bottom line is, if you do not want to pay what the seller asks, then you just dont get it...there will always be someone out there that will pay $1000 + for a large datnoid.

Me being one ;)
