I have no idea, but the fins are stunning. Looks like a yellow tailed chaleus?

Chalceus came to mind when I saw it too. Couldn't say though. I've only seen pink tailed.

That looks like a nice tank but in one of the close up shots it appears to be leaking.

hmmm well the "tank" is a hippo tank at a zoo, somewhere in the neighborhood of 20-30k gallons. nice tank is kind of an understatement. and no it wasnt leaking it had been raining the night before. you can see my wife in the reflection of one of the pics with here furry hood up cause it was only about 40 degrees.

this says they can have yellow fins and the green on the sides matches, but why would i be seeing anywhere that they only get to 10" when these fish were around 24"

Ten or ten thousand gallons its still a tank, glad it wasnt a leak though. It reminds me of an African display tank at the Adventure Aquarium in New Jersey it has some of the biggest venustus I have ever seen and a few hippos.

Could be a grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) with yellow fins?

BIG Yellowtail Chalceus
and a LOT of Buttikoferi...

This is NOT any kind of carp or chalceus. Being that they are with AFRICAN hippos, and AFRICAN buttikoferi, my guess is that it is some sort of AFRICAN characin. What ever it is I am totally digging it! I want to know more!

Thats a lotta buttikoferi.
Going on the theme of the tank they will be an african species.

Like others have said, it looks like a larger cousin of a Pink Tail Chalceus, but I have no idea. Never seen one before. Cool fish.
My pink tail grew to 6" really quick, but hasn't grown at all in the last 6 months. They definitely don't get to be 2' like the fishes in your photos.

this fish has me going nutty, i cant figure out what the hell it is and i have basically stumped some of the greatest minds in fish keeping, the mfk elitists. i almost have to find out what it is and buy one now just because.

Try contacting someone at the aquarium or zoo. And ask them what species it is. It would be better to do this in a email. Cause they will most likely have to look it up. Include the picture and what tank it was in.

JDs right it is definetly NOT a typical Chelceus OR a carp.
I want to say I've seen something similar in Oddballs photos.

They are African tetra, and have yellow tail

he said the fish is approx 24"
... 10" and 20" (53cm) is a big difference...
most likely a Bcrycinus Macrolepidotus (if not, it will still be in that family, Alestidae)
True Big Scale Tetra :D

hopefully the zoo will give us a definitive answer as to which species it is, but going off the morphology it fits. especially with the enlarged upper jaw.

update, i recieved a call back from the zoo this morning and she told me that it is a nurse tetra, alestes nurse. but the only info i can find on them says 25cm.... fish was alot larger than that. maybe info is wrong or they told me the wrong fish.. either way i guess i will just have to buy some and grow them out to find out for myself. the lady from the zoo also said they school, get large, and like to jump.
