My Freind has a 12'' silver aro his gill's are curling what could be doing this? Water parameters are good! Will they go back to normal or will he have to preform surgery? Thank's in advance!! I will try to get pic's!
gill curl happens when water conditions are not right. what's the water parameters? also which part has curl? the soft membrane or gil plates?

Im going to his house tomorow after work to test his water myself and from what i could understand it's the soft membrane that is curling @ the end of his gill!! Thank's

If water parameters are not right shoud do a 25-40% water change and add a litttle salt!!

All the fish I have seen with what you describe have been in poor water and have had poor diets. I have also not seen rolling of the gill plates go away. But I do know that once the water and dietary issues are taken care of the fish will do well. They just may not be show quality anymore.

Yeah in aro's it is a sign of poor water parameters.

high nitrates...anyway, u should perform surgery..if left like that, the gills will be exposed to bacterial infection which in will eventually kill the fish.
which part of the gill has curl? the soft membrane or the hard gill plates?
most of the time its a sign that water parameters are not good. :) what are your parameters?

hold onthere bobalooo!!! :D
if its minor gill curling (slightly folded) you dont need surgery to fix it
if you correct the water parameters it will right itself
but if it curls over alot or completely and stays that way for awhile i would go ahead with the surgery

Cool link Delgado! I would agree also with Delgado's earlier post, there is no need for operation if the gill curl is minor.
slow down...
yes gill curl is commonly caused by bad water and/or diet, however surgery should be your last option!!!
As long as its not too severe, just install a powerhead.. Give the aro some current to swim against as well as making sure the water quality is good of course.
I have saved quite a few aro's from surgery with just a powerhead.
if the curl has just began kepping water in tip top condition would reverse it. but if it already has this condition for a long time, surgery is required.

you guys are forgeting that too small of a tank can cause gill curl as well.. if the aro has to bend and turn to aften it can cause his gills to curl

I should have read more. a 12" aro has plenty of turning space in a 150, but not for long.. if there are to many decorations in the tank this could be a possibility though.

Salt should take care of it, if he caught it early enough. I have seen a aro do that when the water in the tank is to hard

if you realise, the gold aro in that link...the gill curl aint that bad...but why want to risk leaving it open to infection?why dont just cut it off and put some medication?it is not to hard after all..if you have the tools that is.
