I want to see all of your 55g bichir tanks. It may give me some ideas, also I want to see how some of you use the space.
I'll post mine up as soon as it's full w/ fish...

IMO, 55g tanks make for terrible polypterus tanks, too narrow, at least for long term use, but for grow-out they're okay.
My first polypterus ever was an ornate, I got it when I was in high school living with my dad and didn't know much about polypterus other than they reminded me of coelacanths and I liked them.
I kept it in my 'big' tank which was a 55g. That was back in 2002:

I have changed much.. Updated pictures coming soon. Substrate didnt bother him but he had to really sniff for his pellets, still found them in under 2 minutes. Highly recommend canister filter surface skimmer (fluval). http://s60.photobucket.com/albums/h3/chewible/?action=view¤t=IMG_1598.jpg

it was a scratched up acrylic tank I bought for $3.. i know about keeping it behind window.
Cut to size some cheap black felt and affix with velcro strips. It'll keep the sunlight out and add contrast to your tank.

Yeah, they're a bit narrow, but for the smaller species I think they're alright.
I won't be putting any Ornates in, that's for sure. :D
Nice setups everyone (wookish and Cohazard)!

Here's a quick shot of mine from a few months ago. It's got a little less decor now, and there might not be any polys in it in a while either.
