I will probably be running some filter socks on my 240gal african tank. I have never used filter socks before so I have a few questions. The tank has two 1.5" drains and ill be flowing around 2000gph total. It will also have 2 xp3's for just mech filtration as well.

Is 200micron good enough for everyday pre-filter duty? I will have stockman style standpipes so no other pre-filter...

How quickly will 200m clog up? I know it depends on a few things but in general...

The more filter socks, the more time it takes for them to clog?? Like if I take each 1.5" drain and split it to two 4" filter socks (making it 4 socks total) will that make them clog slower?

Thanks

hard to say honestly. just have to watch them and see. i do use 200 micron also though and like it just fine. i will say you can get filter socks really cheap from grainger.com

That's pretty much how they work. Good idea to split them.

My polishing filter subsystem is going to have two banks of 3-5 progressively smaller micron sock filters. I'm going to build it to handle 5, but will start off with the largest, middle, and smallest. If I need to add more, I will.

How quickly they clog is dependent on how much particulate matter large enough to get caught by the sock is in the water.

I know you cat really tell at this point...I was just wondering if it would last a couple days or would it make it a week or longer. I'd really hate to ahve to swap them out ever other day ya know...

guess ill just try it out and see...

Because my fish are pigs, and I end up with bits of plant material and duckweed in the overflows, I tend to rinse about every other day. So I found having a clean one ready to go helped. I also like to bleach them about once every week or 2. (I soak them in a dechlorinator after the bleaching)
I like to rinse using water from a water change as it's exiting the siphon.
I have the socks hanging in the sump, and like nolapete says, if I forget to rinse, it just overflows.

If you want even better mechanical filtration, put the 200m inside a 100m or 50m. The larger one keeps the finer one from clogging too fast.

Yeah I know it will just overflow...but I didnt want to get my scrubbies all gunked up. I'll def have a stack of cleans ones to swap out.

I found some on grangers site. Some are poly fiber and some are poly mesh? Does it matter....or just as long as its 200micron it will work. I cant have them too long because of the way im building the wetdry with the room I have in the stand.

Now thats an idea! I was just going to run a 100 or 50 here and there to polish the water. But that sounds like a good idea if I can work it into my filter plans.
