You need allot more hiding spaces if your other fish are taking it over.. Then you need hiding space for them and the cons.. Allot of the fish we all get regardless of attitude... suggest hiding spaces.. So if you have just started placing it in the tank and it's being rented by others chances are you need equal spaces for all of them to pick a home...

Are your cons paired do you have males and females?? Or better yet do you have another tank? A small one even a 20 gallon would work better.... If they are unable to establish their own area you might have probs... More pots more caves more homes for your fish..

Or like stated earlier put them in their own tank and watch the breeding begin!! LOL

Not to mention, the eggs, let alone the fry aren't likely to survive in a tank full of predators. How big is the tank, and how many fish are in it?

Make sure you have females, and males which are old enough to spawn for one thing, and those orange pottery planters are the way to go.

Make sure you have dividers too. The other hostile fish in the tank might prevent her from committing to a nest site.

if you give them hiding places they will breed a small tank for them would be best if you want lots of feeders

Add some large rocks or other places for them to set up a territory. My theory with my convicts is just add water!

very true. Although convicts are very commited to breeding and to protecting their fry, it must be remembered that they are a small breed of cichlid and cannot spawn if constantly threatened by larger, aggressive tankmates.

Dude DIVIDE !!! the convict's from the other fish and give them some thing to lay there egg's on ( ex:...flower pot /cut or not.. ) and that's if there not all male's :(

these are hardy and very easy to breed fish ....hell I have breed a managuense to a convict... :D

F.Y.I.. these fish grow to 6'' and need at least a 55 gallon tank for them only at some point in time..

My convicts spawned 5-6 times in a 125 gal tank, but due to the amount and aggression of their tank mates all the fry were eaten w/in 1-2 weeks of becoming free swimmers. Then the convicts just stopped laying eggs. 6 months later I obtained a 180 gal tank and needed to cycle it- in went the convicts and whalla- baby convicts appeared again. I've since begun to stock the tank (the sand, rocks and filter were already cycled- I just added convicts for a week to prevent lossing more expensive fish) and the convicts are actively defending their half the tank.

the moral of the story? if it's stressful to watch over 200+ fry, just think how much more stressful it must be to fight off 50 hungry african cichlids. The parents (female) must have just gotten tired of wasting all that reproductive energy in the 125 gal.

I agree with the rest

I have been sucessfully breeding convicts in a standard 20 gal tank with nothing other than the heater filter and a clay pot I just gave a way well over 50 adult convicts and found some more free swimming fry today

so if you cannot get them to reproduce in you 125 givem a tank of their own to make food for the others LOL

add some rocks or more pots. Do some water changes. If you want the fry to live you should put the Cons in their own tank.
