Cichlids are not normally "open water". They need places to hide.

if your open to all cichlids not just africans, amphiliphus xiloaensis or sagittae are both open water predators and very active TUIC has them in barred or xanthic morphs

I think you're referring to the tyrannochromis genus. They are african malawi haps which can get pretty big. Lots of the malawian haps are open water such as the champsochromis caeruleus for an example.

If you're going for an African setup, Malawi in particular, an all male tank with Protomelas, Aulonocara, Copadichromis, Placidochromis, Lethrinops species is what I would go for. Pretty much your average small, mid-sized haps to maximize the output of color.

And yes, all the species above will appreciate the open space, no need to put massive amounts of rocks in there.

Great advice. I wouldn't have anything better to say.

I've never kept them, but saw a big one at a lfs kept single and it did pretty well. Perhaps anyone who has kept the tyrannnochromis chime in?

You can easily keep a large predatory cichlid in that tank with no decor if you wanted to. Something called a tank buster/wet pet. Anything from trimac, red devil/midas, jags, etc would do.

Edit: Whoops, forgot this was in the african cichlid section, lol.

I imagine that you can keep any variant of tilapia in an "open" tank.

That's Champsochromis Caeruleus and it needs a 180 gal minimum. You can definitely try that in a mix of all male Malawi tank, but then you'd probably better go for larger Malawi haps as well.

Kind of like this

my tank has same footprint as a 180, just not as deep.

I'd go for the all male tank I suggested first, because of the smaller size and less aggression, but if you want to try the predators... 125gal is not enough for the long run as they mature. You need a little more water column for them to be able to "avoid" each other in need, hence why my 180 suggestion.

Let me know what you prefer and I can think of some sources.

You could have Blue dolphins and rosstratus.

If you want to keep a Tyrannochromis alone in a tank that should be no problem as these are solitary(is this written correct?) animals.

I would keep them in a larger tank. I know that a lot of people keep these larger fish in smaller tanks(and I know Konings advises that as well) but I don't agree with that. These fish get quite large well over 30cm(12")

My personal experience is that the fish(and fellow companions) do a lot better in larger aquariums, and then I am speaking of a minimum of 2,5 meter length(~8'). I have been keeping these kind of fish for quite a few years and had regular spawning as well.
