Hi, guys I was wanting to know what is the lowest temps these guys can safely stay at, I have 4 4"ers in my pond oustside and last week we had a cold front here in Houston the water got down to 52 F. I lost about 20 out of 25 2" red devils but the cats are ok and were active the whole time, actually feeding on the red devils as they were dying off, I did'nt think they would make it at first but they pulled through with flying colors.

i couldnt tell you and i dont think anyone will have any documentation on what temp they have to have since they are a hybrid maybe they have a stronger gene pool that is tolerant to lower temps. its a possibility, i know my red devils start acting sluggish at about 72 degrees so i can deff. see them dying off at 52.

from one of necro's posts
4.Temperature
I've found that they do best from 75-85 degrees, and feed more and more the higher the temp. I've had a heater failure and the water was down to 45 degrees F. He pulled through, but I wouldn't suggest it.

My old guy lived through a 3.5 day power outage this past winter where the tank temp dropped to the low 50's.

I have just bought 2 babys and there temp is at 26c, no probs so far and they are only 2" so more vulnerable to disease due to bad water temps/params ;)
