Below is a peacock I purchased for $2.00 out of a "assorted africans" tank at a LFS about 6 months ago. He was about 2' at that time with little color. He actually had tiger oscars in the tank with him that were twice his size. I guess I kind of felt sorry for him as he was pretty torn up. I think it was a good catch as he is blooming now on a steady varied diet and has his own section of a divided tank. Question is, can anyone point me in the direction of where to buy 3-4 females as I do want to breed this species. I live in the southern California area. Thanks!

Thats one beautiful specimen! You definetly want to breed it. I've just picked up some fry, so hopefully will get some nice males which get as colourful as yours!

Your best bet is buy some small (1") unsexed Aulonocara Baenschi from some one who breeds them and grow them out and sell/trade the males if you don't want them. Its rare to see females for sale.

Indeed, avoid stores, unless you trust the guys. Not that I have anything against LFS, but I'd really stay away from "assorted tanks" when picking female peacocks. The above mentioned method most likely will land you F1s, because a lot of breeders keep their wild stock and just sell the offspring, so the gene pool will be very good as well.

Thanks! This makes perfectly good sense. Time to get hooked up in the Cichlid club of Southern Cal. Thansk for the advice! Cheers!

I have a benga female if you would like her. She's about 3" and has held frys three seprate times already. I also have other peacock females that also have held(not benga) if your intrested. All the females I have are because I thought I was picking a male. U can have them all if you like, I give them to you. I've already been thinking of taking them back to my Lfs, but haven't had the heart to. I'm also in Socal

Patience my friend. That was about the size of this fish when I got him. As I stated, he had little to no color when I got him. He's now 3.5 inches, (just body) and just started really blooming 6-7 weeks ago. That's about the time I started him on NLS. That stuff really works.

Hello JohnnyRooster! I may just take you up on that. Do you have a pic of your Benga female? BTW...did you ever figure out your salt issue? I can give you some in-sight on that if you want? I use salts minimally (a few times a year) in my big tank with my Haps.

I'll see if can find a pic of her. If I find were my camera is take a pic and send it.
about the salt issue yes I have. I come to realize that it comes to personal preference. I add 1tps for every 10g of water. It work great for me and my fish seem happy. Any info your willing to share is very much welcomed.

I'll check on that pick.
