There is a pond right by my house and the last time I went fishing right at the shore line were hundreds upon hundreds of 1-3 " sun fish. My question is if I were to catch a few net fulls and put them in a 55 gallon for treatment. What can I do to insure they are disease free. Quick Cure and Salt? What would be the time frame they would need to stay in quarantine? This would be awesome if i could use them as free feeders

I use them but always inspect them for parasites

Is there any concern over all those little spines on thier fins? as far as them injuring the predator they are fed to?

any predator that swallows its prey whole willl eat the fish head-first, thereby negating the problem of having dorsal fin spines stick in its throat

I have used them for years and never had a problem except that an 8" brown bullhead tried to eat an 8" sunny and suffocated his greedy self.

If you are worried you can feed them bread with garlic juice while salting them, it will kill most worms and protozoals.

Lol, I might try that, Bet it's not as good as drunken shrimp soup though. I had it in S.Korea, it is made with pickled greens, cold slightly salted plum wine, and live bumblebee shrimp. Chasing them with your chopsticks is half the fun.

are bumblebee shrimp very similar to ghost shrimp? is there a problem with getting their carapace stuck in your throat?

They are like glass shimp with black bands and max out at around an inch and a half long. they live in shallow, fast steams on rocky bottoms in Korea. Thier shells are very thin and have texture much like a recently molted crayfish. The little legs are annoying though. I would love to find some for sale because they are freshwater, and not tropicals, Korea gets cold in the winter.

I think you are taking a risk not to mention you are messing with the eco system. Feeders are not that expensive. Don't be cheep buy fedders.

The greens add a salty, peppry, tartness.

heyyyyyyy sound good, how do i get the juice? buy it? squeeze it?Easiest is to buy a jar of minced garlic and sqeezew out the juice, otherwise just use a garlic press, it doesn,t take a lot of juice and you can always mince the garlic that is left and cook with it.

In many places, like the west coast the sunnies are planted invaders and not natives, also sunnies are notorius for overpopulating and then stunting so removing smaller individuals actually encoures growth in those that remain. You should check your specie though and avoid the uncommon types like pygmies or blue spots. Yes there is a risk but from clean waters it is less than from commercial gf.

when my buddies peacock ate his smaller channel cat, the catfish's back fin got snagged in its throat and we had to remove the catfish from it using pliers, catfish have one big back spine bone probably is a deterrent to other fish
