take a look at my new Polypterus,
if I am not mistaken, its a Polypterus ornatipinnis, the size is about 7",
I am so glad to have it, It feeds on sinking pellets;I will move him into a 50 gallons tank soon;
the guy on the lfs told me that this type is a nasty one, then it made me wonder what happen if I mix it with my senegalus and albino, they are twice smaller than the ornatipinnis, any comments?
by the way, just wandering also what is the rarest species of Polypterus?

Nice Ornate! They are a bit "nasty" in personality yes, but you should be okay with your other polys together. They like to nip but dont tend to go for the kill...

They like to nip but dont tend to go for the kill...I agree with you about their personality. My 5" ornate will nip at my 12" delhezi for no reason. Then it sends 20 bichirs flying all over the tank and crashing into everything.:irked:

What an awesome looking ornate! My first polypterus was an ornate :D

You will probably be able to keep them together, but be careful.

From what I've seen around the net, mainly endlicheri is a risk to eat other bichirs.

thanks, hmm I guess I'll be more careful, I will get a bigger tank, 100 gallons perhaps, and set up some hiding space, at least they dont have to face each other that often, lol,
the good think about them right now, they are eating sinking pellets I put in the tank, and they're always gathering together like family, and eat the pellets together when I do so,
I guess I better make sure that food always available,

Rarest type of normal colored poly right now is P. Bichir Bichir, although they are becoming more available. Platinum variations are even more rare.

have you guys ever seen a defected albino bichir?
few days ago I saw one of it in lfs, and it was really small, 2", and from half of the body to the back was in a " V " shape, so the tail seems to pop up;
it was really odd, but have you guys ever seen anything like it?
I also have one albino, about the same size, and the back bone was not align with its fin, so its like going to another direction, but everything else was OK,..., I'll post pict. next time, still working on my new tank...

Yeah sometimes they are born with deformities. I've seen an ornate with a bent spine.

I've also seen bichirs with zig zag scales, or sunken in scales that made them look like they were dried up or something.

some people here would pay for a higher price for bichir with deformities, maybe they think its a unique one,
anyway I am still planning to get another bichir for my collections, I dunno its name but I saw it today in the lfs, and I will buy it soon; its fins are wide and long, the body looks like a common senegalus, with no pattern at all; It looks awsome, I'll post some pict as soon as I get it, but just wandering the name of it,...
