Even though this is supposed to be for pets, a lot of people who keep herps also probably enjoy going out and catching them as well. I thought it would be interesting to share finds we've made while out herping.

Right now I only have a few salamander pics.

First, a couple pics of a mudpuppy we caught while sampling for my ichthyology class in August.

Then, a couple of a giant tiger salamander we found in a big wooded vernal pool today while I was out with my natural history class.

In my neighborhood I have various anole species, iggies, basilisk, I have seen a salvator....and what I thought was a mangrove as well. I also think i have a tokay in my shed...and various other night geckos. 20 mins south of me samthing except they have day geckos..and they have caiman tegus burmese and the list goes on.....I want to go to the west coast and go herping for nile monitors near cape coral.... they are established

I've never actually been herping, but I am always looking for critters when I'm out and about.

The first photo is of an adult Pacific Giant Salamander (Dicamptodon tenebrosus), the only one I've ever seen. I have seen juveniles a few times at the bottom of deep holes in creeks. I came across him while hunting for Chanterelles about five miles from my house. The Pacific Giant is the world's largest (heaviest) terrestrial salamander, this guy was just over twelve inches long and chunky!

The next photo is of a terrestrial phase Rough-Skinned Newt (Taricha granulosa).

The first lizard is a Western Skink (Plestiodon skiltonianus).

I believe the last photo is of a Northern Alligator Lizard (Elgaria coerulea), but I'm not 100% sure.

Thanks guys and thanks Dan for adding those pics.

It's been a while since I've been out simply for the purpose of herping. My pics were from doing other things for classes and finding them along the way. I'm hoping to find some more herps while out and about for natural history this quarter and I really can't wait to see what I find on my trip this summer (to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands).

Amazing. Is the Pacific giant salamnder endangered?
