i have read how koi keepers dont have to worry bout nitrates and that koi are very tolerant to high nitrate levels

is this really true???

I think carp are a lot more hardy than other fish, but optimum conditions are best. I use Seachem prime to detoxify nitrate.

My uncle keeps koi and he has nitrates in his water. His have been doing fine for 10 years so I guess they are pretty tolerante, unless he does something to keep them down.

Koi and goldfish are very hardy. But just because they can withstand high nitrates (and ammonia too, even, EG people cycling tanks with goldfish) doesn't mean it's good for them.
