I just got a 3in silver dat yesterday for $6 at a LFS. This is my first dat and he is in brackish water right now cause that is what the store had him in. I am in the process of swiching him over to fresh slowly.
The guy at the fish store said that if the fish is raised in brackish and you swich it to fresh that you will cut it's life expectency in half. I doubt he even knows how it was raised, but is he true or is he full of BS.

For a Silver Dat... I would advise not to make any changes now.
Prob start the FW conversion when its about 5 inches and bigger.
They are quite sensitive when small.

Thanks for clarifying, both of you.
$6 for a 3" Dat? What a Great deal!! It should be fine if you want to convert him to fresh. Just sloooowly..... acclimatize him.
I agree. Slow acclimation, shouldn't shorten his life much. I'd also make sure it's actually brackish water that he's in at the LFS. Mine has several tanks labeled "Brackish," but when I inquired about the salinity of the tanks one day they said that they are pure fresh, just labeled "Brackish" so customers know what type of water is best for the fish.
Great pickup BTW. I just got a silver dat not long ago and I love him.

Yeah it was in brackish supriesingly. I had him use a hydrometer on the tank. The first time I actually find any kind of dat they have him in brackish. Oh well, for $6 it is worth converting it.

I need to go pick up a new batterie for my camera. I will post some pics in the Photo lounge soon. He is nice though, has perfect stripes, they all go all around his body and connect.
Plus I need to get an ID on another fish I got with him. I believe it is a barrimundi but not sure.

Definately worth it. Good luck with him
