Silica sand might have sharp edges that scratch the FRT's shell and cause an infection

i dont think its that cheap over here in asia now ever since they got banned for export by the origin countries in early 2005 when FRT got listed under CITES II.

Wow, sweet turtle!
He is soooooooooooooooo cute:D I would say leave for now the tank bare botom, make daily small water changes and have that really big tank on your shopping list;)
Right, i really wanna know where these are coming from....Somehow there's a few getting over, i've seen a small one in the UK and a couple in the US...
Can i ask where you brought this from and can you PM me a contact?
I'm doing a university project on FRT's and if they've been CB would be really helpful to get in touch.

All I know is, this baby FRT is came from a wholesaler (fish store won't share their supplier list) and it is WAY CHEAPER (half of the cost) than what I paid for
Unknown supplier ---> Wholesaler ---> Fish Store ---> Employee's discount (a friend) ---> Me
Everybody needs to make money, by the time it gets to me the cost adds up
BUT
I am for certain that this baby FRT start out at a cost as low as $100

Incredible little turtle i hope you enjoy it as much as i do.

They're farming them in the East already actually, in large ponds. But it seems these are coming from another source or some back hand trading. Taking the wild collected eggs is still prohibited.

Yeh, that's the way with all fish unfortunately, it's just odd how many baby FRT's are suddenly popping up.

I have a similar situation like this person
http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=229743
BUT
I am not dumb enough to just dump the turtle into the tank right away
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I got about 100+ pounds of crushed coral, they were taken out from a saltwater tank about six months ago
and
it mixed with all kind of tiny shells, tiny pebbles and some dark stuff..
so
I washed and rinsed it for about 20mins, is it safe to use for the turtle? or should I just buy new? or just wash the sand more??
Thanks all for the lovely comments ^^
This turtle will be part of my retirement plan ^^
since they take about 18-25 years to mature... so the profit will comes in 20-30 years later, when I am about to retire ^^
I keep mine in Estes Reef sand, which I get from Petland Discounts. It's non-abrasive and safe for freshwater. I add a small amount of crushed coral (but weathered down so no sharp edges) to buffer the pH. I also add sea salt, as this helps maintain a healthy shell.
They were banned from export from their native countries long before 2005. 2005 is when they were updated to CITES II. I used to be ignorant just like many of you on the board.. You can be sure there are people in Jail as we speak who were targeted for selling FRT's
Message to all of you... play with fire and you can get burned...
very cute turtle I agree.....
I sit back now and think,,, all these people who want illegal fish and turtles have no idea what they are messing with. They have no idea how many FWS officers are on the internet to track down illegal imports etc They have no idea how stiff some of the punishments are. They have no idea that a small handful of members on this site have actually felony records for messing with illegal fish and reptiles.
I myself do not wish to have a felony on my record so I refrain from keeping anything even close to illegal.
If you really want to keep your turtle with substrate, keep it with very fine (powder-like) sand.
Don't just use fine coral sand as it can cause the pH to spike too high. I mixed mine with fine river sand.
Shells, and corals, pebbles etc are a no no for FRTs as it can cause abrasions on their shell especially when the FRT starts to dig ...and they love to dig.
I have never added salt with my FRTs before and their shell remains healthy. Salt is not necessary. What is more important is quality water conditions.
The only advantage with salt would be to minimise the risk of fungal and some bacterial infections but with good filtration and regular water changes this shouldn't be a problem.
