In a 75 or 125 gallon growout tank with weekly 40-50% water changes and varied diet...approximately, on average, how long could I expect it to take a male or female dovii to go from ~3" to 12"?

thanks :)

ps..I know there are all kinds of variables that go into fish growth...I'm just looking for an estimation

(1.5- 2 years) i'd say.

Really? I thought they grew a lot faster than that:confused:

Me too, I thought they grew approximately an inch a month for the first year. :(

Nope. They grow pretty slow. I have had mine in a 75 for about a year and he is around 11" now from the 3" I bought him at.

Edit: My Dovii was raised by himself and had (2) weekly 50% water changes. He was also fed a varied diet of NLS, Omega1, Hikari, and raw shrimp. This was as fast as I could get mine to grow.

I'd say 12-18 months based on my own experiences. If the fish is alone and can hog all the food and gets perfect water, somewhere near the lower end of that estimate.

That's not a bad growth rate. I'm hoping mine grow about the same in the 210 with just two males and two females until they pair up.

About how big are they when they start developing the attitude they are so famous for?

For a cichlid it's not bad growth, but it's a long shot from the 1" per month that somebody before me posted. Mine has been growing at about 1/2" per month.

Mine was insane from about 4" on...and it is only getting worse with size! They are all different though!

That was me that posted the 1" per month, it was a poor assumption I believe. I could have swore I read that some where but that doesn't mean much. It's amazing what you can find on the internet, hard to believe it isn't all true. :)

Somebody else may have had one grow 1" per month, but they are few and far between from what i've seen. I have given mine the best care I possibly could and 1/2" per month is the average growth i've observed. I'm very happy with the outcome thus far though! Awesome fish!

You mean the internet is always correct?

Mine is actually growing fairly slow. He grew like a weed to 6.5" but after that he's been growing .5" or less a month. He's in a 120g by himself and receives 50% WC each week. He also has a varied diet consisting of 5-6 items.

See, honestly, that's more the type of time frame I was expecting to hear. I've had oscars and jags...even red devils that have grown faster than what some replies have said to expect from a dovii. I'd heard that umbies grew a little slower but that dovii grew like weeds.

I know that typically, CA's will grow to about 1/3-1/2 their adult size failry quickly and then growth will slow down...in some cases it will slow waaay down.

Keep in mind...his was in a 240!

And still under 1" per month.

And still under 1" per month.

Exactly...

The circumstances I raised my fish under more closely resembled what the O.P. described...therefore, I would think he could expect results similar to what I had.

Mine has grown about 1/2" per month in an indoor fish pond approx 150 gal. maybe more but the water temp is much lower like 67-68 degrees and the sunlight is natural he's about 6-7" in about 1 year. Also the pond is only fed once daily.

well now I'm curious to see what type of growth mine will have so I added a blog post stating when I got the dovii and how big they were so I can go back and keep track of how quickly it grows from month to month.

thanks everyone for the input. :)

I purchased an F1 male Nicaraguan on Dec. 16, and he was around 3.5 inches. He has only been growing about 1/2 inch per month.
