I've been reading about polys for about 3 months and haven't been able to decide what would be best for me. Could you help me select my first poly? I have a planted 55 that is being populated. I just bought a brown GK (4") and a flying fox for the tank. It currently has a couple guppies and neons, and yes, I know they'll go away when I put the poly in! It also has a 9" dragon goby in it.

What species would be best for me? I'd prefer a "mild tempered" fish that grows relatively slowly.

senegal or palmas big enough so the knife doesnt eat it though. and yes, your neons and guppies will be gone quickly.

For a 55 gallon I'd go with a Senegal or a Delhezi.

The knife isn't very large. I have a larger ABK in another tank and I haven't seen it bother my ottos. I'm worried about getting a poly that will eat the GK!

Also, would boesemanis live for long with polys? I'm planning on picking up some in a few weeks, around 2.5-3" each.

I agree a sen would be great in a 55g tank.

The one time I tried rainbow fish with polys, my sens and polli's started hunting them down as soon as I put them in the tank. They don't mix IME.

Senegals are a great first bichir they are usually active when the tank lights are
on and seem curious about things in their enviroment -Anne
