View Full Version : If it passes...
Sorry if these questions have been asked before, but if it passes, will all non-native fish importation be banned, or will all non-native fish be banned. I'm saying will we still be allowed to keep fish from other countries if they're not imported, like if we got them from someone who breeds them? Or will all fish not native to the US be banned?
Also how long until the ban goes into effect if it passes?
No, we won't be able to keep anything non native. The breeding would be banned as well, so no "non-native' species would be allowed/distributed. I don't know how long it would take to happen, but it would be a disaster.
You also wouldn't be able to transport any non-native species across state lines at all. If your gerbils just happened to have babies, by accident, you would be in violation. That's how insane this is.
Oh God.
If it passes, it won't stop me from fishkeeping, I'll just do it illegally, in my basement.

Or move to the Philippines, where, despite corruption issues, the government actually tries to solve more pressing issues than what someone owns as a pet.

No. I stated my fact that the hobby is indeed getting more exotics albeit the likes of fishyguy and a few other members. Cite snakehead and polypterus for example. When have you last heard of the other species coming in Philippines? This is why I said the hobby is growing bigger everyday unlike before if not for fishyguy and the other hobbyists.

Oh, ok. Sorry for the misunderstanding. I do see more varieties of fish now in the country as compared to 7 years ago.
And a load more Bichir species. :D

There is much more pressing matters such as the economy yet some stupid govt officials spend their time to try and get this passed. This will hurt the economy even more closing down LFS, etc.

no gov. officials shouldn't be the ones to be mad at. the people who started this thing are all merged tree-hugging groups like PETA and USHS (the humane society). more specifically a lady from GUAM... its not even a state and shes trying to inconvenience everybody because shes lived in a single place her whole life with tree snake problems... she prolly has no children and yells at people in breakfast bars for eating eggs and bacon, then when the owner of the place tries to throw her out she threatens to inspect and if she finds a single rat dropping she will sue...
joking aside,
totally private companies that came up to "the man" with puppy dog eyes crying about how its bad to keep fish and assume everything non-native might "invade" our waters, asking him to do something about the "bullies picking on poor little fish in their cages" and the "poor little fish in the lakes"...

I thought the particular species had to be determined to be a problem before it would even go on the do not import list? Why would something like an Appistogramis be put on such a list? Or even a Discus? What harm do fish like that do? I mean are we getting ahead of ourselves here or am i reading the bill wrong? A certain type of fish would have to be a serious problem before it would even go on the list if i'm reading this thing right.

Still doesn't mean that the bill is right. You want a situation similar to New Zealand in your country?

Wait wait, is the bill all non-native fish? or problem non-native fish?
and if it's all non-native fish would lfs have to resort to selling native fish?
please excuse my laziness preventing me from reading the bill a second time.

the reason i think this bill will FAIL is that we already have a damn "Banned species" list, endangered list, and invasive list...
alot of good those are doing!
putting it idiot-proof and simple, all the bill is really doing is adding most fish in the world to the banned list in US for no real reason... thats it... cause they want to.
damn hippies...
if the bill passes, they wont stop with just animals, they will control everything about animals. then try to shove that "dont eat any animals or eggs" **** down our throat.

from my understanding today they need to prove that a species would harm the ecosystems and humans and they have a high chance of doing so to be put on the list... they want to change it to they need to prove that it wont..... what happened to innocent until proven guilty?

What ticks me off the most about this bill that it is still allowing goldfish. Hello?! They're a coldwater species that already are having a negative impact on the ecosystem. How stupid do these repersenatives have to be not to research a bill that is going to have such a major impact on an industry and their own citizens. :swear::angryfire:FIREdevil:swear::angryfire:FIREd evil
