i have had my frons for about 2 years, whitch puts the oldest at 4 years old(its a female). now on the 24 of may i saw here scoop up some eggs in here mouth. i know the male is of breeding age,5 yaers old from a different family. my problem is how do i know when to transfer her and will she hurt the fry in her mouth?also how would i transfer her.if she spits them out will the 12 other frons try and eat them? :feedback:

Leave her in the tank. If you want to strip the fry from her, I'd scoop her out after 3 weeks of holding the eggs. then strip the fry and raise in a different tank. then throw he back in with the rest of the group to breed again.

but at 3 weeks wont the fry be too young?

how about when i net her ,do you think she will stress and hurt the fry? or is there a better way to do it?

Net her carefully. U will probbaly lose some in the process though. :(

you'll get good at it
after a few trys you will get it down pat.
i would use a very fine mesh net
like the blue discus nets

If she's a first time Mom to be she might even eat her own eggs.

If you plan to breed them regularly you might want to invest in some egg tumblers. that way in case u strip them too earlry you can still hatch them. Or strip earlyu on purpose and hatch them in the tumbler so the female can fatten up sooner and spawn again.

egg tumblers are a very nice investment

hold her up and down whith face in water and open her mouth

fry will swim out, when placing her back into the tank hold her by the lip and put her in with head facing straight up and slowly do this or air will get stuck in her stomach eventually killing her (3-22 days) very tricky process

thanks for all the tips. what about the one with holding her downface first, if i dont do it this way will she get an air pocket in her that cant be burped out? kinda like puffers?

nick

nope, its to let the eggs/fry out

if you put her back in the tank with face down she WILL develope air pockets

I've been breeding fronts for over three years and what i do is wait up to 4 weeks or until the sacks have disapered (you find this out by holding her against the tank and opening her mouth to let 1 or 2 out )if the sack is gone from the fry then take them from her by keeping her under water and moving her up and down till they are all out of her, also need to know that the fry should be seperated from the main tank.Once you put her back into the community tank keep an eye on her because the father of the fry's might be upset with her over loseing his baby's.

GOOD NEWS EVERYONE!!!
on the 28 of june it has been 5 weeks and i flushed my female. thanks to all the help everyone, she was holding 20 fry. they are around .75 to 1.0 in long. i found a guy on the web that sells a type of bottle that flushes the fish without letting air in and does it in about 2 seconds. thanks again to everyone for your feedback and info.

Try a tempory tank divider to seperate the others from her while netting the fry, might save a few extras

Can you tell us what conditions you used to get the fish to spawn?

I have a trio of F0 zire blue mombu frons ( I know it's spelled wrong ) and the are 7 or 8 inchs long ( age unknown ) and they seem to have no itrest in spawning. I keep them in a 135 gal tank with a water temp of 75deg. PH is 8.3

I have slow water movement to try and simulate their natural environment .

i took my temp up to 80f and laid down a few flat large rocks.also its a bum deal but they need to pair up. try moving the male to a different tank for a few months. my male was in a different tank for 3 months after i got him. also i used very low light, they seem to spawn more when they think is night time. putting the back in the main tank will make the females fight for him.(they wont hurt each other only set the pecking order).

also are you sure that you have one male and 3 females?also they need to be around 3-5 years old to breed.

i have been breeding fronts for a while,i usually let the female hold for around 3-4 weeks and then seperate her from the rest of them give her a tank she hold for another week or so and will spit them out usally at night, when you put on the light she grabs them back.i have been lucky so far.hope it helps?
goodluck and god bless

Thanks for the offer..... glad to see you thinking of others .

Well the male killed one of the females so I moved them into my 300 and they seem much happier and they are eating much better and they never hide now.

I'll be looking for some large female F0/F1 zire blues.

All right repair I tried to help you out but it seems as if you are passing on the favor. I have ordered a few fry from the east coast and I should be getting them this week. So I won't be able to take them off you hands anymore. lol. Good luck finding a female, if I see one I'll let you know. BTW great idea! I would much rather have a garage full of tanks rather than a gargage full of junk

Not sure if you saw the other thread. I bought Mpimbwe Ziare Blue Frontosa. About 1.5" and I paid $10 each. I'll try to get pics of mine up sometime this week. The pic in the other thread is from the same parents but previous hatch. They are 3" and he is selling them for $20 each. Mine already show an awesome blue color in the fins. I hope it shows in the pics. Actually I'll post the pic of the 3" guys here.

I would do it after the lights go off. Then she wont be as difficult to catch and wont stress as much and possible hurt the fry.
